The quantum security starting bell is about to ring. For many CISOs, NIST's forthcoming post-quantum cryptography standard has been the signal they've been waiting for to kickstart their quantum security efforts. According to Tom Patterson, Managing Director for Emerging Technology Security at Accenture, that wait is almost over: Potentially even by this summer. The new standard will be based on lattice mathematics, a complex field that's resistant to quantum computing attacks. I have been fascinated by the developments around harnessing quantum mechanics for computation. One one of the potential challenges as the era of quantum computing is looms closer is the risk to current data security. Current encryption methods like public key encryption (PKE) might soon be rendered obsolete, which would open vulnerabilities in existing and legacy systems. Quantum machines have the potential to break today's encryption standards with ease, jeopardizing our digital infrastructures, financial assets, and brand reputations.
