In a zoo or safari park, one of the “must have qualities” a Director or Operations manager needs, is not just the ability to build and inspire a great team that will help your park reach its vision and intended purpose, but also he/she must be able to hang on to that team. And one of the ways to hang on to your team is give them the freedom to produce great work, because it makes no sense to recruit staff with experience and skills and then micromanage their work. Micromanaging your team will only affect your team's morale and in the process create a very dysfunctional park to work in. When your park has the staff with the skills and experience to not just get the job done, but to get it done to a high level, you as the director need to give them the freedom to be creative and to be the very best version of themselves, while knowing that you are there in the background to support and guide them if they need help. When a director understands that they don't need to be the smartest person in the room, and allows their team to demonstrate their skills and experience, that team will then start to pull of great feats in their area of expertise, benefiting the park and those who work there. timhusband2005@gmail.com

As I walk my dog, I trek past the same houses every morning. It’s not uncommon for me to see lawn and landscape service companies at work. It’s so ordinary, that I can’t remember taking time to stop and watch the work of any of these companies being done. My lack of attention to their work is due partially because it’s a pretty routine sight. However, it is also because after being in Florida for 20 years, I am used to seeing most Florida lawn service teams attack people’s yards like a swat team on a mission. They jump out and work so quickly to get the job done. It’s not really about quality. It’s more about check the box, it’s done, now let’s get the hell out of here. However, on Saturday morning, I couldn’t help but notice a team member of a company I passed. He wasn’t going like hell, he was meticulously cutting shrubs. I paused to see the way he was working with concentration, pride and precision. It made me look around at the work he had done, and notice that the yard all around him looked amazing. It made an impression on me. I continued watching him work with excellence for about 15 seconds more before I seemed like a stalker and needed to move on. But before I walked away, I felt the urge to take this picture of their company truck. I didn’t think much about it. However last night, as I saw the photo in my weekend shots — I was struck by how odd that was for me to do. I don’t make it a habit of taking pictures of trucks, or staring at people. But the work ethic and commitment of one individual stopped me and made me want to learn more about this company. In fact, I not only wanted to know who the company was, but the photo is evidence that I wanted to MAKE SURE that I wouldn’t forget them. That is the impact and influence that one team member can have. The landscaper wasn’t selling me, his effort and commitment was inspiring me. It was awesome. If you have team members who create exceptional experiences through pride, dedication, and commitment—make sure that you value, understand and embrace the impact that they make. I posted about 6 months ago to start a Naturally Florida. After seeing the success of Naturally Network partners Naturally San Diego; Naturally MN; Naturally Boulder and friends that started Naturally New England, I feel the 3rd most populous state should have some representation. We have grocery organizations like the Florida GMR that do a good job down here, but not focused on natural products. It is understood that we don't have a key natural headquarter account here and we're not the first area you think of regarding natural products. However, Whole Foods Market Florida does well and Sprouts Farmers Market is growing here! Thoughts? Should we cast a wider net for all of the Southeast? Location? Well, I'm in Jacksonville, but Orlando is more central. Closer to Miami and Tampa as well! I'm willing to take the lead on this, since I posted about it. Own the dirt, by knowing the dirt. I grew up hunting a 180 acre farm / woodland in Western PA. To a 12 year old boy, 180 acres is a massive plot of land. This same farm, my father, uncle and grandfather all grew up hunting on as well, along with their friends, the owners. As we gathered our gear around the trucks opening morning, in the pitch black of the morning, everyone would be sharing where they will be going for their stand. My Grandfather: “I’m headed to the point, just off the gas line.” Uncle Jeff: “Powerline, near the grapevines.” Kevin: “Upper field at the end of the hollow.” Bob: “I’ll head across to the junkyard.” My father would take me to “the old Oak” right off the gas line. “The Oak” - looked like all the other oak trees. There were thousands of them! The only way you would know if you are at the right the oak, is if you had been there before - many times before. Same holds true for Outside Sales Teams. You can’t possibly know your territory, accounts and contacts without having spent time with them. Outside Sales Leaders, your job is to make sure your team has the proper support that enables them to know their territory inside and out. 👉 Focus your time as a leader on removing all obstacles that keep them from spending time in the field. Help them to own the dirt, by knowing the dirt. Owning the dirt looks like: 👉 protecting the current customer base (retention) 👉 understanding where your competitors have strongholds & why 👉 knowing accounts with expansion opportunities 👉 having a clear line of sight to your entire Total Addressable Market 👉 seeing all of the above accounts........at the right time #outsidesales #fieldsalesleadership
