Social media managers wearing all of the hats. But why are they so often expected to do so many jobs? In football, quarterbacks aren’t asked to be wide receivers, tight ends, punters, defensive ends, water distribution engineers, and linebackers. They’re part of a team and focus on what they do best, where they can focus and bring the most value to the team. Social media managers are (or should be) part of a team and should be able to focus on what they do best vs asked to play every role and being spread too thin.

Love the football analogy! Having knowledge of and being an expert in are not the same. However, I found that some organizations are fine with good enough. They want the post up, email sent, blog shared fast and pay far less attention to if it’s engaging, trackable, or optimized. Then, it’s the hamster wheel of “why isn’t this working??” Yes, anyone “can” do all of those things, but I prefer to let the people with the skills needed to drive results do the job.

No kidding. I wear big stack of these myself. Some days it's fine, but there are times I really wish I had an extra set of hands to help. There people that I do ask for feedback, but they aren't on my team.

I feel... triggered 😂 I think the reason we're expected to wear so many hats is because modern day marketing is fairly new (less than 10 years old)? And most businesses only allocate money to 1 creative role. What do you guys think?
