The history of gumbo is born of struggle, a response to hunger and adversity by creating a rich and savory stew from leftovers. Recipes vary in their use of seafood, chicken, sausage, okra or filé powder. But all gumbos start with a roux, a combination of fat and flour used to thicken the broth and hold the ingredients together. Morial uses gumbo to sum up a philosophy of adaptation through struggle and applies it to leadership and community development. We’re applying The Gumbo Coalition ideology to our own mission. Now in its second year, The Prospect KC’s Gumbo Fest 2023 celebrates and supports the revitalization of the financially divested Eastside. The Prospect KC is a ground-breaking social enterprise founded in 2019 to serve Kansas City’s Eastside, a neighborhood struggling with food apartheid, a racist and oppressive system that creates inequitable food systems. We've moved! But don't worry, we're not too far! Our Auckland operations have relocated to Neilson Street in Penrose. Thanks to everyone's support, we are able to grow our operations to get more food where it is needed most. Well, we've planted over half a million trees in the last 3 years. Not a bad little milestone for 2 Manchester dads. As ever in life, this was down to the collective efforts of many including our brilliant members. Well done to all involved and the Play It Green | Certified B Corp community. The 519,000 trees we've planted so far is enough to rebalance the emissions of every Licenced Car in Manchester (172,830 cars) for the last 11 weeks. That's not why we do but it is a pretty cool stat to share. We've also helped over 100,000 people and 300+ businesses take more footprint reduction actions and passed on funds to 35+ charities, seven receiving four figure sums. We're all about #reduce #repair #regive We're a small business helping other businesses be greener and more impactful. To leave a legacy and not shy away from the fact that being green helps you win more business, grow and be more profitable. Conscious capitalism as my fellow cofounder Richard Dickson would say. If Carlsberg did subscription services...it would be Play It Green.

Tips for throwing an Ecofriendly Super Bowl party: 1) Shout out to New Belgium, which happens to be located here in Colorado. Not only do they have some cool beers (IPAs) their brewery is wind powered. 2) Consider some vegetarian (or local farm to table) recipes 3) Make a charitable donation- maybe a portion of the "Super Bowl squares" can go to an organization that's doing important work 4) Use "real" plates/ cutlery/ cups rather than paper products 5) Encourage guests to carpool (especially with a designated driver) 6) Don't waste leftovers/ recycle 7) Buy beverages in bulk (ie hit up Costco or Sam's Club)

In 1974, Colonel Sanders wanted to dismantle the Big Chicken landmark in Atlanta for brand consistency. The twist? That giant chicken was drawing more customers than his own image. It's a classic case of founder's syndrome, even if it wasn't his. Founder's syndrome happens in non-profits too when passionate leaders struggle to hand over the reins, sometimes stunting growth and innovation. Take a board member who has seen the organization through from day one but resists new fundraising strategies, potentially missing out on new donor segments. What's your experience with founder's syndrome? Have you seen a 'big chicken' situation in your organization, and how did you address it?" #leadership #nonprofit

In 1974, Colonel Sanders wanted to dismantle an Atlanta landmark, the Big Chicken, to align with corporate branding. Colonel Sanders thought the restaurant should promote him, not a big chicken. Until, he learned that this location was the busiest KFC franchise in the world at the time. Turns out, his face didn’t sell the most chicken. A 56 foot chicken sold the most chicken Moral of the story: 👉Founders aren’t always right Founder’s syndrome is real. (Not saying the Colonel has it, I just needed a good story 😉.) P.S. Have you been to the big chicken? - Hi, I’m Madeline McCoy Let’s talk #nonprofit, #fundraising, and #marketing 🔔

A Good Thing (UK) is a new not-for-profit online platform that connects charities racross the UK with businesses of all types that have things to give away. At Women In The Food Industry we spoke to co-founder Catherine Benwell about the platform’s mission to reduce waste and to encourage reuse – meaning less to landfill and more to a good cause. Discover why she has her sights set on the food industry. “There is endless potential for reuse within the hospitality industry”, said Cathy. “Many of the items that charities are telling us they need are the sorts of things that might be found within a food business: tables and chairs, carpet tiles and other flooring, soft furnishings… Plus of course kitchen items of all sorts: Countless charities that support homeless people have registered with the platform, and these charities are in need of everything from dishwashers and tea towels to plates, spoons, microwaves and bowls.” She also told us how they work with food charities such as Edible Rotherhithe Southwark & UKHarvest to rescue good food. It’s super easy for a restaurant or food business to sign up with A Good Thing, and begin donating things you don’t need. A huge thank you to Mecca Ibrahim, Co-Founder of Women In The Food Industry, for featuring an article about A Good Thing (UK). It's a great piece exploring how the UK's food industry can get involved in sending less to landfill and more to a good cause! Catherine Benwell highlights there is a whole other dimension for the industry to explore when it comes to sharing – beyond the more widely discussed redistribution of food waste. In your kitchen, you'll find an abundance of essential utensils, from knives, spoons, and forks to other culinary tools. While these items are indispensable for both meal preparation and dining, an excess of them can lead to unnecessary clutter and reduced kitchen efficiency. It's a good practice to periodically assess your collection of knives, spoons, and forks to identify those you no longer need or use. If you have excess utensils in good condition, consider giving them a new purpose by donating them to a thrift store or a local charity. I did a thing. At Paddy & Scott's, we are constantly pushed to take risks at our leadership team meetings to step out of our comfort zones. So when the incredible Little Lifts team asked me to join their sponsored skydive for charity, despite my extreme fear of heights, I couldn’t say no. For months, I agonized over everything that could go wrong and questioned my decision. But yesterday, it all came together. I jumped out of a plane at 13,000 feet for a fantastic cause. I wasn’t alone—six fellow Little Lifts jumpers joined, and everyone nailed it. This experience taught me a lot. First, taking risks is crucial. Without risks, there’s no opportunity to overcome challenges. The biggest lesson? The power of SUPPORT and TEAMWORK. I arrived at the airfield, nerves in full swing, with my amazing family supporting me. To my surprise, Jonathan Reed and Zoe Hill, our company owners, were there too, cheering me on. Would I have signed up if it wasn’t for Little Lifts? NO. Would I have gone through with it without the amazing support from my family, friends, and colleagues? Maybe not, but their support made all the difference. One of the best experiences of my life. I encourage everyone to take a risk. It doesn’t have to be skydiving, but I highly recommend it 🪂 #TakeRisks #Teamwork #Support #Skydiving #LittleLifts #PaddyandScotts #Fuellingambition
