Facing global challenges, science offers hope and plays a key role in finding solutions. During her speech at the anniversary ceremony Rector Sari Lindblom emphasized the fundamental importance of research in periods of uncertainty. “The last few years have been a time of large-scale global crises. After the coronavirus years, war is being waged in Europe. Biodiversity loss and climate change continue to threaten our future, and people are uneasy about the growing global influence of artificial intelligence and tech giants. It is precisely circumstances like these where universities, science and research are needed – to replace uncertainty with hope, and to fill our minds not with bleak prospects but with optimism. The mission of universities and scholars is to carry out research and teaching to provide society with new knowledge and promote research-informed debate. This mission also includes bridge building between different views. Research has a unique role in predicting phenomena, investigating causalities and carrying out retrospective analyses. At their best, gathering data and conducting research help prevent future crises. In the face of conflicts and crises, researchers help decision-makers and the public understand what complex phenomena are all about. My top three takeaways from the first day of the UN Science Summit (#UNGA78), whose subtitle could be, "Science is the driver of progress, prosperity and well-being for all": 1. Accessibility: We can solve the pressing problems of this time with data, i.e. scientific knowledge. We already have plenty good data and derivatives, but these must be made accessible. This includes education. Origin, language, educational background, for example, must not be barriers to data accessibility. Healthcare providers must have better access to healthcare resources, incl. technical knowledge. I.e., people must have better access to healthcare. "A healthy population means a healthy economy". 2. Cooperation: Since the UN has no law making and enforcement power, nations must work together to achieve common goals for the good of the world's population, the planet. This includes enabling the mobility of scientists, especially from the world's underdeveloped countries, and creating joint funding opportunities. We need to create ecosystems. 3. Macroeconomics: Progress through digital innovation must take into account that access to affordable living for researchers, social security, access to low cost energy, access to capable human resources, etc. must be in place. Value needs a chance to grow. I still have more than three hours to go but have already taken away so many great ideas today that I am very much looking forward to the coming days.

Yes, yes and yes! This is the same for any industry, but especially so across the complexity of the Blue Economy, which seeks to unite many disciplines.
