The world has millions of people struggling with mental health issues. There are even more people struggling silently afraid to ask for help. How can we as a compassionate society still fear talking about what’s “really” going on? Due to confidentiality, we do not offer volunteer opportunities at the farm. Sometimes life is hard. Trauma, grief, stress, all physically change the structure of our brain! Our brains are not out to get us, the change in structure is a natural design to keep us safe. But when it gets stuck in that survival state, problems arise. Neuroplasticity is SO cool! Our brains have a natural built-in way of healing themselves after we face unbelievably hard things. As relates to my last post about charitable giving, as a mental health counselor, I am well aware of the importance of direct involvement in making a real difference. While monetary donations are certainly helpful, there's another aspect that we often overlook - our time, expertise, and compassion. Perhaps I can offer my counseling services to those in need, or hold workshops and seminars on managing sleep, anxiety, OCD, and Tourette's. I can provide educational content that could eventually lead to self-empowerment and self-treatment. In the grand scheme of things, we should remember that empowerment is a gift that keeps on giving, much longer than any amount of money can ever provide. So, let's ponder - what can we offer other than money? Let's dig deep into our own knowledge and expertise, use them in service of others, and ultimately, create a more empowered and resilient society. Thoughts? #mentalhealth #charity #empowerment

Understanding who we are is at the core of growing up for all of us, it’s complicated, confusing and at times confronting, and the process is lifelong. For young people living with brain injury, this journey is a thousand times more complex, and is further challenged by the lack of understanding they face. This month's understanding brain injury series will focus on how some of the young adults in our community learned to navigate this process, and find their way to understanding themselves, and more importantly, valuing themselves and their lived experience. For our community at Heads Together, these young people are a beacon of hope for families, and much needed trailblazers for the hundreds of thousands of young Australians living with brain injury. Today is #givingBBYOday, and I’m helping BBYO to raise funds to give more Jewish teens in communities around the world access to compelling leadership experiences, lifelong friendships, and a meaningful sense of pride in their Jewish identities and belonging in the Jewish community.   I could go on and on about the work I do, how meaningful it is, or the impact BBYO has on teens around the world.... but honestly, nobody says it better than the teens themselves.
