Certified Translator and Interpreter Director, Community Interpreters (ATIO) Director, Terminologists (ATIO)
What a week! 1). Tackled six final MCI (Master in Conference Interpretation) exams. 2). Attended my first ATIO Board of Director’s meeting. Thinking back to a few months ago, a lot of things have changed. The turning point really happened when I decided to take a leap of faith. Actually, come to think of it, I took several leaps and jumped through various hoops, too. The first was when I decided to switch gears and try my hand at the conference interpretation field. As a community interpreter working in a conference setting, I had to learn to allow myself to be flexible with the craft, something that took some getting used to. I also had some less-than-stellar moments over the course of this journey; moments where I quite frankly wanted to throw in the towel. When I left my position as the Member Services Coordinator with ATIO, I thought about joining the ATIO Board of Directors. It started as a thought, one of those “I’ll get there eventually” kind of thoughts. I knew I wanted to continue supporting people who share the same passions and interests as me; people who have both victoriously succeeded and miserably failed. People who, like myself, appreciate a reliable support system of like-minded individuals. So, when my peers nominated me to two of the open positions on the board, I took yet another leap of faith, and without hesitation, accepted their nominations. And here I am now. I didn’t expect to be elected by 60% of the members in attendance during our AGM. I also did not expect to be elected as both the Director, Community Interpreters and Director, Terminologists all in one sitting. I imagined having to take different steps and paths for this sort of achievement. And yet, life has a way of surprising you, always. I also never thought that I would miss my weekly classes and practice sessions with my fellow MCI classmates. Yet, I do, as bittersweet as this whole process has been. So, I guess the moral of my long story is to not get so caught up in reaching the destination right away. Congrats Josie!!! It really has been a wonderful journey and at times has felt like a roller coaster, especially for those of us who have busy lives with family and work. You are a great professional with an awesome language combination and skill set that will certainly take you places. Among the obstacles that we find to achieve our goals, fear is the worst. So definitely, getting out of our comfort zone will always be the first big step to new opportunities. I wish you all the best in this new and exciting phase!!
