"Community schools look different from state to state, and even from school to school, but at the heart of the strategy is an emphasis on meeting the multiple needs of not only students but also the community. The basic idea is that schools should serve as hubs in the community and partner with local organizations that serve the many needs of families and students. Schools are the delivery source because that’s where children and families are." Case studies from #Pennsylvania, #Florida and #NewMexico show how a community school model can improve chronic absenteeism. Community schools work because they work with the community. https://buff.ly/3KPWXaK by Jeff Bryant #Attendance #SchoolAttendance #CommunitySchools #EducationPolicy #K12PublicSchools

ARE WE READY FOR THIS CONVERSATION? "For many children across the United States, access to great educational opportunities is determined solely by their zip code and, in many districts, parents and family members have gone to jail for sending their child to a school outside that boundary. These arbitrary school boundaries often correspond to redlined real estate areas, originally created as a means to segregate neighborhoods based on race and limit access to economic opportunity to those already in a position of privilege. Providing equitable access to high quality education can be a down payment on the reparations owed to communities that have been historically underserved and have yet to experience restorative justice after centuries of systemic oppression." "I can't tell you the number of families who say their kids are anxious or depressed -- and they're little ones, 4 or 5." This is from a front page piece in today's New York Times entitled, "Pandemic-era babies are now school-age, and lack basic skills." It will be critical in the next few years that we build stronger partnerships between educators and families. My book, On The Same Team: Bringing Educators and Underrepresented Families Together, provides practical steps to enhance our capacities as educators to successfully meet this challenge. Families are a vital and often untapped part of the solution, and when we more effective engage them, all the outcomes we care about dramatically improve! #familyengagement #family #teachers #school #schooleadership Solution Tree TalkingPoints NAFSCE (National Association for Family, School, and Community Engagement) Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning Edutopia - George Lucas Educational Foundation https://lnkd.in/gANbM-sw

Experienced change agent and business builder. Passionate about supporting school district leaders’ improvement efforts. Inclusive team leader.
This article affirms something I have seen time and time again in my work in schools. When students feel a sense of connection to the adults in the classroom and school building, they are motivated to attend school. We have to build school systems, and in turn, classrooms that foster students’ sense of connection and belonging. Tip for today for my educator friends- reflect on whether you are authentically capturing student voice to understand how to best connect with students. Curious how folks are doing this. #studentengagement #studentvoice
