Joshua Zinder Architecture + Design’s Post

ICYMI: Architecture Week Day 7 - Religious ✡️ Our project highlight is the Yakov & Hava Telyas Chabad Jewish Center! • Outstanding Design | Community Centers/Joint-Use Facilities - American School & University Showcase 2023 Sitting on 7.2-acres with two wetland zones and two adjacent streets, the Telyas Chabad Jewish Center was squeezed into the limited buildable space. In addition to the Judaic requirement that the sanctuary face east, the sloped site posed a challenge with allowing direct access outside for the nursery school. With these considerations, the community center needed a strong organizing element, achieved by creating a central forum that the other elements were organized around. The building sits low in the landscape, taking advantage of the slope of the site, while its modern form leverages natural and regionally sensitive materials to fit into the local historic overlay. By inverting the gabled roofline over the sanctuary and social hall, the structure maintains a low profile from the street. The inverted triangle form is reminiscent of the iconic Chabad menorah. This inversion also becomes a design feature in the ceiling of the sanctuary and social hall. In addition to the nursery classrooms, the central library feature and sanctuary are structured to be flexible for educational, communal, and spiritual experiences. • Thank you to everyone for a great #NJArchWeek24 this year and to everyone who participated in our I Spy quizzes on the JZA+D stories! #NJArchWeek #InteriorDesign #ReligiousArchitecture #Synagogue #Chabad #ValueoftheArchitect
