At the Vienna Motorsymposium, one paper compared the direct manufacturing cost of two vehicles from the same segment - SUV - made by the same OEM, one an ICE and another a fully battery electric. It was a fairly detailed analysis of various sub-systems, so this summary article hardly does justice. The Advanced Clean Transportation Expo was held in Las Vegas last month, and it provided a unique opportunity to discuss the ground realities of the energy transition happening in the commercial vehicle space. While there is much work being done towards electrification, the total cost of transportation parity is distant, and the infrastructure challenges remain. In the meantime, the industry is working on near-term ICE advances and renewable fuel solutions.
