(Former) Director at U.S. Department of State. Senior Advisor at DAWN.

A new resignation: Today we learn of the resignation of Alex Smith from USAID, where he was a senior advisor on Gender-Based Violence. Like much of the U.S. Government, USAID relies on contracted expertise for many of their functions. Alex was employed there for the past several years by Highbury Defense Group, an Accelint company. As The Guardian reports, he prepared a presentation for USAID on maternal and child mortality among Palestinians. First, AID's Middle East office reached in to force edits to his presentation, including removing a slide on international law and barring use of the word "Palestine"; shortly thereafter, USAID canceled his briefing entirely. His company reached out two days later to give Alex the options of resigning or being fired.  Contractors form a vital part of government teams; in my own previous office I relied on several truly exceptional contract workers, and across government it's the case that we wouldn't be able to function without their support. Yet, contractors lack the employment protections that federal employees have, and can be fired without notice for any reason.  Alex's case is the most blatant effort I'm yet aware of to remove someone from an agency role because of their work on this, and highlights the value of civil service protections in protecting what modicum of debate exists within government on U.S. policy towards Israel. Without such protections, I would not have been able to have raised the concerns I had been raising for many years on this issue, and many more employees would have been fired for having done so in the past seven months. But those protections are under threat from plans such as the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025, which would strip protections from federal employees. Regardless of where you stand politically, if you want a government that can stand against the worst whims and inclinations of a President, Alex's case is an example of what will happen should such changes be implemented. Alex's resignation also highlights the corporate kowtowing to political pressure that leads companies to censor and punish intellectually honest commentary rather than risk corporate profits. If USAID initiated Highbury's actions to remove Alex, after years of positive performance reports, on the basis of his presentation, and if Highbury moved to remove him on the basis of his professional analysis, it is an outrage against the mission of the former, and a stain on the reputation of the latter. Contractors working alongside government employees don't have the same protections, and are restricted from performing certain functions, but they are still very much part of the government family, and the family that is any well-functioning office, and I am proud to welcome Alex, now, into a new family - the family of U.S. Government officials who have resigned.

You are both examples of Integrity. Meanwhile, the world is witnessing examples of Hypocrisy at all levels, for all the wrong reasons. #integrity

Hypocrisy 🤔 Putin since 2022 has ignored ICJ orders to leave Ukraine. I strongly support NATO (including the US) aid Ukraine’s defence to retain sovereignty against Putin’s aggression. Since the Holocaust, and the 1948 creation of Israel (on land Jews/Israelites had a centuries old connection), for years I supported Israel’s defence of its sovereign state including against Iran and Iran’s proxies (including Hamas and Hezbollah) and the US protection of Israel WITHIN Israel’s borders. Unlike the US Republican Party who support Netanyahu’s far right’s massive bombing of Gaza civilian infrastructure and horrific killing of thousands of civilians. (This is not the 1st time but it’s the worst). As well as Republican Party support for illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Israel’s attempts to take Jerusalem, not share it 😞 Ukrainians meanwhile have provided no provocation whatsoever to Russia. Putin simply wants to resurrect the USSR and regain lost power - power that was lost through the Iron Curtain, corruption and suppression. Suppression and corruption that caused agreement by the Dumas to dissolve the USSR. All nations who support 2 states (which I do) should be calling for Putin to leave Ukraine (including Crimea).

The question here, will ever a different U.S. Administration have a different position of the current one towards the war of Israel on the people of Gaza??!

I love this new family - whose principles and values and priorities led them to make the right choice. This family is stronger than they think - and it's growing!

Thank you for highlighting this and naming the company that is part of this crusade to silence truth and prioritize profits. Naïvely, I thought "freedom of speech" was a sacred right in this country, but obviously the last 8 months have shown us otherwise.

As a former USAID contractor, I can attest to this behavior. I had three contracts, two of which had Chief of Party or corporate management’s negative reactions to necessary and impartial recommendations that ‘policy’ didn’t support. Fortunately, the good one resulted in an entire country having a successful and sustainable implementation that now supports major economic development and has significantly had a positive impact on their GDP.

When I watch Blinken talk, he reminds me of Chemical Ali, later dubbed Comical Ali as he used to announce that there were no US troops in Iraq whilst US troops are pictures behind him. Blinken, is the same... completely ignorant, oblivious and denial to whatever is being reported about the situation in Gaza. Sometimes, I wish I was that heartless!
