Academic publishing for me has felt out of reach, intimidating and dare I say elitist BUT... Recently, I spoke at a university dinner in which I explained why it's vital that higher ed teach "soft power" skills. That's for two reasons: 1) No matter how you define it, success depends on the skillful use of soft power. Healthy family relationships, for example, require listening to learn, not to win. Same with building creative, innovative teams at work. Increasingly, employers don't care whether you graduated from a "brand" school. (In fact, that could be reason for suspicion.) Instead, employers care whether you bring needed skills to the table *right now*. Hence reason two for teaching how to exercise "soft power": 2) In the A.I. economy, people will pay a premium to work with individuals who value building trust through relationships. Last week, the co-authors of a New York Times essay put it this way: "Today the knowledge economy is giving way to a relationship economy..." "Communication is already the most in-demand skill across jobs on LinkedIn today. Even experts in A.I. are observing that the skills we need to work well with A.I. systems, such as prompting, are similar to the skills we need to communicate and reason effectively with other people..." That includes "building interpersonal relationships, negotiating between parties and guiding and motivating teams."   "We believe there will be engineers in the future, but they will most likely spend less time coding and more time on tasks like collaboration and communication. We also believe that there will be new categories of jobs that emerge as a result of A.I.’s capabilities... and that those jobs will probably be anchored increasingly around people skills." This is why, most days, I get out of bed pumped with purpose. Poets&Quants calls Bridging the American Divides, co-taught by Professors Bruce Usher and Todd Jick, "that class" at Columbia Business School — "the stuff of legend, the one that fills up fast because it is worth the price of admission." The class is "an exercise in dialogue," where students discuss polarizing topics such as globalization, immigration, job loss, race, income, education, and politics. The class culminates with a trip to Rust Belt Ohio, where students meet with business and community leaders working actively to address these issues. TIME SENSITIVE (deadline 1/31): Sam Lessin and the Harvard Board of Overseers. As a financial aid kid from rural America – my dad was a cop and my mom was an elementary school teacher – getting admitted to Harvard University blew my mind. HARVARD! A place of scholarship, academic excellence, critical reasoning, freedom of thought and speech, intellectual curiosity and open inquiry. I LOVE Harvard, and I owe so much to it. But to be blunt: the institution has drifted from these lofty ideals, in my opinion (and in the opinion of many, many others). There is a rising fear of engaging in open discourse; a chill in academic freedom; increasingly disruptive speech and actions intended to shut down dialog; and a fear of the consequences of saying or writing something that violates the prevailing orthodoxy. By my lights, this is illiberal ….. and deeply out of step with the core tenets of this great 400-year old institution. One inspiring potential opportunity to rebalance Harvard: electing Sam Lessin to the Board of Overseers. I encourage you to write him in so that he can get on the ballot.
