Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF)’s Post

📓 JRF's annual report on the state of #UKPoverty launched this morning, revealing some stark truths. 👇      📊 The latest analysis from our researchers shows a worsening picture of poverty in this country, with families in poverty now on average needing thousands to get out of poverty.   The average person in poverty has an income 29% below the poverty line, equating to a gap of £6,200 for a couple with two children under 14.   📈 With 14.4 million living in poverty in 2021/22, our politicians must take action on this vital issue.    🗳️ A general election is on the horizon, and we are demanding practical solutions from political parties to address this.    Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/ebJWWJ_R

  • Family of four at the bottom of the frame with text 'The gap in income for families to escape poverty is growing'
A line pans up the screen to a pink poverty line while the figure of £6,200 appears as the average equivalised amount for this family type to escape poverty. Final text: It's time to turn the tide on deepening poverty

Poverty has a negative impact on our youth, not just in the home but on their social life. This is an area that we are fighting to support. Day to day activities can draw out the road ahead and in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage, youth can very quickly be dragged down the wrong path. Emotional and mental health are the conversations that we have discovered to be an outcome from poverty. For children, Mum and Dad should be the ones dealing with the issues and the young people should gain as much as they can soak up to help create a road ahead with better opportunities and outcomes.

Living in poverty is expensive. Cost of survival.

The poverty gap is widening. At talks I do about Clean Slate Training and Employment CIC, I often conduct a thought experiment: What if economic status was a protected characteristic? It re-frames the poverty trap and makes mitigation the responsibility of the haves, not the have-nots, just like it does with other groups. I'd love to explore this further as it immediately triggers ideas about the solutions, which need to be practical, impactful and embedded in every part of how we live.

Results from trials of universal basic income (#ubi) have shown: participants do more un/paid work have better mental and physical health outcomes (ROI in health/care costs) better community/social cohesion less crime, inc DV (ROI in reducing police costs) better educational engagement and attainment increase in economic activity (ROI = more tax paid, more jobs created), while people pay off debt, rent, buy better food, and clothes for work/school, retrain, buy childcare, etc. What single, tested, and proven policy would JRF recommend that has shown the same positive outcomes?

No. The politicians will not confront this serious, debilitating issue - not least because they have given themselves another payrise for "poor performance"; and will continue to show their disconnect on this issue and so many others. #localauthorities MUST also be challenged for their #performance on #Inequality and #poverty exercises. The fight should not just go to #centralgovernment, #localauthorities have an "Equality Duty" towards #residents and we should know that this is not working.

Growing poverty - a national disgrace- Universal Basic Income based on National living wage- fair taxation and meet the challenges of future employment. https://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/basic-income.asp

Thank you for this valuable work and we will continue our work on the ground too trying to tackle children's access to safe volunteering opportunities. We are hoping to instil that sense of service and promote their active participation as changemakers as the leaders of tomorrow.

The gap continues to widen and the rich continue to get richer as the poor slide into destitution.
