Today is Verrazzano Day! Hailing from Florence, Giovanni da Verrazzano embarked on several voyages where he charted significant parts of the North American coastline. Notably, in 1524, he sailed into what is now known as New York Harbor, becoming the first European to explore this area. His explorations contributed immensely to the European understanding of the geography and potential of the New World. Today is a reminder of the Italic origins of New York City and the bridge is a symbol of the deep-rooted connection between Italy and the United States. Tonight, NIAF will celebrate Verrazzano Day with a special event in New York City—a screening of the docu-film "Giovanni da Verrazzano" dedicated to Verrazzano's expeditions. NIAF was proud to support this film with our Grant Program. This event not only highlights Verrazzano's Italian heritage, but also underscores the enduring impact of his explorations on global history. #🇮🇹🇺🇸

Thank you, New York, Italy and France for celebrating with us on the 500th Anniversary of Giovanni da Verrazzano arrival into New York Harbor in April 1524. Verrazzano, an Italian, Florentine was a navigator and explorer in the service to King Francis 1 of France. He mapped the Atlantic coast of North America from the Carolina's to the Upper Banks. We assembled at the statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano, overlooking Ellis Island and "Mother of Exiles", that was sculpted by Ettore Ximenes and dedicated 1909- the same year my paternal grandfather, as an Italian immigrant, first entered the harbor from Sicily. Thank you sponsors for supporting this milestone in the Age of From Star-gazing, Galileo to the Italian men in the Age of Explorers, we celebrate their child-like wonder, bravery and ingenuity that we want: - to see into our dark ourselves- a heart of darkness, -to look into an abyss and not blink, -to soar into "Infinity and Beyond", - to sail, as immigrants and refugees who came to NYC only with hope, & - to gaze into a telescope now a reality in space exploration of the "Final Frontier" not for conquest and subjugation, but to find our better selves!
