Back in May, we asked for your help in opposing an amendment to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (FWCA) that would force our wild neighbours into a life of cruelty. While the official comment period has formally closed, a decision has not yet been reached. The fight isn’t over yet. In Ontario there are 24 train and trial areas in which dogs are trained to hunt wildlife. The victims of this practice - like timid coyotes, frightened foxes, peaceful cottontails - can be legally trapped and taken from their homes. Torn away from their families, these animals are then forced into pens to live the rest of their lives experiencing intense fear, trauma and extreme stress as they are horrifically chased down by dogs on a regular basis. In 1997, the archaic practice was set to be phased out when the FWCA declared no new licences would be issued and that existing licences could not be transferred. Under the current proposal, this would change – train and trial areas will only become more prevalent. Please stand up against cruelty to wildlife by signing the petition below. $3.5 𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒌𝒐𝒂𝒍𝒂 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝑺𝑾   The NSW Government is delivering on its commitment to provide additional support to wildlife hospitals, koala protection and research with more than $3.5 million in new funding provided to three regional wildlife care facilities. Koalas in the state’s north will have a more secure future with $1.4 million allocated to complete construction of the Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital in Wollongbar. Friends of the Koala, based in Lismore, will receive a $110,000 grant to vaccinate 300 koalas against chlamydia, and develop a koala database. This funding builds on previous NSW Government commitments to protect koalas in the Northern Rivers from vehicle strike and degraded habitats. Grants totalling $460,000 were awarded to Richmond Valley, Ballina, Lismore, Tweed and Clarence Valley councils for signage to alert drivers to slow down and watch for koalas in vehicle strike hotspots. Koala habitat restoration is also underway in the Northern Rivers region, with $810,000 invested to restore 660 hectares across private land and national park estate. We are thrilled to learn that both the alpha female (Mhlophe) and beta female (Sheni) of the Munywaneni pack that we sponsor were pregnant this year and collectively have given birth to 5 pups. They chose den sites in a low lion density area in Hluhluwe, a smart move as it's shown to increase denning success. What's truly remarkable is that the sisters are denning together, a rare behaviour driven by their strong bond. Typically, the alpha female would isolate any other pregnant female, the unity of the sisters is heartwarming. The pack's strength has grown with the successful raising of last year's pups, ensuring the best start for the upcoming litter. Kentucky’s outdoor heritage NEEDS YOUR HELP! Visit the link below to oppose legislation that would restructure Kentucky’s Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) in favor agricultural interests. Senate Bill 3 would (1) administratively attach the KDFWR to the Department of Agriculture and (2) give all KDFWR Commissioner appointments to the Commissioner of Agriculture which would be a significant change to the wildlife management system and would be different than every other state in the country. The KDFWR and its Commission should primarily serve Kentucky’s fish and wildlife resources and the sportsmen and women that largely pay for the management of these public trust resources. Senate Bill 3 passed the Senate on March 15.
