We've signed a multi-year agreement with H2 Green Steel, paving the way for low-carbon steel production. Our Iron Ore Company of Canada operations will support H2 Green Steel's low-emission production in Sweden by supplying high-grade iron ore pellets. We will also purchase and on-sell Hot Briquette Iron from them to help us understand the needs of the emerging green iron and steel market. H2 Green Steel will be one of the world's first large-scale producers of low-carbon iron and steel. We congratulate Rio Tinto for this initiative to use Green H2 in the production of Iron and Steel. The Iron and Steel industry has a great impact on the generation of greenhouse gases. The short-term production of H2 at a competitive price is an option for the decarbonization of various industries. See: https://lnkd.in/eg2V5Zvr Another industry that must also address its rapid decarbonization in the short term is aluminum, and as an immediate action new Aluminum Smelters should not be built if they do not have a supply of electricity generated from renewable sources. On the 15th and 16th of May, a consortium meeting of TransZeroWaste was performed at the project partner ISQ, close to Lisbon in Portugal.   The results and progress in the different work packages of the project have been presented and discussed considering the key objectives Upgrading low-grade iron ore by combining it with iron-rich by-products; Development of innovative techniques to produce high- quality pre-material for decarbonised future production routes; separation of disturbing components from by- products to replace scrap; and finaly development of the technological basis and digital tools supporting the transition towards zero waste in the European #steel industry. All performed work is related to the objectives of the Clean Steel Partnership and taking the technological and time requirements of the European steel industry regarding the transition into account.

We welcome the Australian Federal Industry Minister Ed Husic MP’s launch of a consultation process to help unlock green metals opportunities in Australia.   Accelerating the production of green iron is critical to reducing global emissions and understanding the barriers and opportunities to enable Australia to play a leading role in this sector is an important step forward.   The foundation for green iron and steel production is very low impurity magnetite concentrates. Currently, Australia does not produce magnetite concentrates that meet the specifications required for green iron technology ("HDRI-EAF"). Lime has a very crucial role in steel manufacturing and therefore it is important to develop fossil-fuel free lime as part of the roadmap towards fossil-free steel. Lime is a common slag former, used by steel industry since a very long time. The properties of lime, contributing with CaO-molecules, enable the steel plant to have the right basicity in the steel slag during the first metallurgical steps of the steel production process. This property of the slag is important during removal of impurities from the steel, as the right slag property enhances the transfer of the impurities from melt into the slag.

I attended the Fastmarkets IRON ORE & GREEN STEEL Conference in Vienna this week. My first iron ore conference since Covid. Green steel was not much of a ‘thing’ back then; it is front and centre today. A huge number of steel plants will be upgraded across Europe in the coming few years, converting from BOF to EAF, with multiple new DRI plants planned. - Yes, this will cost many billions of dollars. - And yes, there will be significant government funding. The lurch to green steel, coupled with EU carbon regulation (such as #CBAM), will create shifts in trade flows of #ironore and iron metallics for the rest of this decade, providing new opportunities for shippers. #FastmarketsIIO #decarbonisation #greensteel
