Step-Up and Step-Down Transformers Step-up transformers increase voltage from the generator to transmission levels, enabling efficient long-distance power transmission. Step-down transformers decrease voltage for distribution and consumption, ensuring that electricity reaches consumers at safe and usable voltage levels. #Electrical_Engineering #Transformers #Power_Transformers

Why is the power factor in generators 0.8? For example; How can we choose the alternator if the power factor of our electrical load is 0.6? We all know the power triangle in electricity. The ratio of real power to apparent power gives the power factor. Under ideal conditions, no phase shift occurs between current and voltage. However, the presence of inductive and capacitive loads causes phase shift. (in forward or reverse direction) Generators are labeled by manufacturers according to a power factor of 0.8. Although this is a tradition, the assumption that feeding inductive loads will keep the power factor around 0.8 stands out. In addition, the ISO8528-1 standard says to use the power factor as 0.8 unless stated otherwise. So how should you choose the generator if the power factor of your load is 0.6 inductive? Below is the operating curve of an alternator whose standard power is determined according to the power factor 0.8. ( STAMFORD | AvK brand S6L1D-D4 Wdg. 311 model product pf: 0.8, class H power for 400 V and 50Hz : 940kVA) According to the alternator curve, if the power factor of our load is inductively 0.6, we can find the active, reactive and apparent power values by drawing lines as seen in the picture below. If the alternator does not operate within the current limit values under these conditions, it will have difficulty. With an inductive power factor of 0.6, the power information of the alternator is approximately as follows: Apparent Power: 940*(0.916) ≈ 861.6 kVA Active Power: 940*(0.550) ≈ 517 kW Reactive Power: 940*(0.733) ≈ 689.2 kVAR Let's verify the result: Power factor = Active Power / Apparent Power Power Factor = 517 / 861.6 ≈ 0.6 #electrical #generator #arkengenerator #stamford #engineering #alternator #powerfactor #load #transformer

Why are Transformers rated in kVA, not kW? Transformers are rated in kVA because of the power loss occurring in the transformers. The losses in a transformer depend on volt-ampere (VA) only rather than the power factor of the load. Can you name any other reasons? Let us know in the comments. #engineering #electricalengineering #transformers #powerdistribution #transformer
