Overwolf has a central belief that the future of gaming lies in the hands of in-game creators. It’s these passionate modders, app developers and game server owners that are providing an untethered lifecycle for major game studios that is keeping gamers consistently coming back for more. Our focus has always been to build tools and solutions to unite in-game creators and empower them to make a living doing what they love. And so it gives me and Overwolf great pleasure to announce that this year we paid out $201 million directly to in-game creators, a 25% increase over last year. For over a decade, Overwolf has provided the creation tools and resources required to make unique gaming experiences for top AAA titles. Our platform now has over 165,000 creators and 41 million monthly active players, and we are honored to be able to support in-game creators across the globe, in turning their passion into a real profession. A big thank you to Dean Takahashi and VentureBeat for covering the story. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eYad5uHu #Overwolf #GameMods #GameDevelopment #UGC #GamingIndustry #GamingNews

Scopely obviously wants to change the narrative about Monopoly Go! The co-CEO has posted a wide-ranging blog post with a range of staggering statistics: - $2 billion life time revenue in less than year - Reached only 3 months after hitting $1 billion in revenue - Marketing budget "less than a quarter of life time revenue", so around $500 million - 7 years in development - A team, at launch of 150+ developers It's hard to know what to make of it. It is obviously a phenomenal success. It obviously cost a HUGE amount of money to make. Is this a coded "you aren't big enough to compete" message? Is it signalling the end of experimentation in mobile F2P? Are Apple and Google complicit in the total death of the mobile platform for anything other than live service, F2P casual games (IMO, yes, especially for anything paid). It feels as if mobile F2P is now in the same boat at AAA 15 years ago, before Steam really took off. You could only really compete if you were Electronic Arts, Activision or Square Enix. If you tried to compete on the same terms, you went bust, like THQ, Eidos and other publishers which could not match the development and marketing spend, tried to anyway, and ran out of steam. So what is the equivalent of Steam for mobile? And it can it save the day? And wouldn't it be ironic if Tim Sweeney at Epic manages to smash open the AppStore monopoly, Steam comes to mobile and it turns out the "Steam of mobile" is, in fact... Steam. https://lnkd.in/eEecfUBj (Hat tip to Nick Tannahill for the link)

I like mobile games, no, really! They can be chill and fun. But in my line of work, when every second mobile game dev studio calls themselves 🌟 Bold and Innovative 🌟 and does the exact thing and monetizes the exact same way, I'm feeling the cringe.
