Measuring retail data for a company like Walgreens or Target is fairly simple. But for the thousands upon thousands of smaller online stores and specialized platforms, you need a different strategy. For one, a lot of those retailers don’t want to hand over their information. They worry that if competitors find out that they’re growing, adjusting inventory, or changing prices, they’ll get run over in the process. Big players will narrow in on the small fish, and ruin their traction. You can’t just ignore those smaller organizations either, nor can you “guesstimate.” They’re too important. Micro-merchants encompass anywhere from 20-40% of the online market. Time to play with AI. What we’ve done at NielsenIQ is partner with Data Impact and Rakuten Intelligence to build commerce sites known as consumer source products, where we can get insights on the overall market from customers themselves. These are places where people shop and willingly share data on their purchases that we can use to generate samples. We’re able to scrub sites using AI to then more accurately bridge those gaps in information. Five years ago, 10 years ago, that was almost a dream. I've spent the past 7 years of my career helping F&B and Beauty brands develop their Amazon brand strategy... now known as Retail Media. The question that I've heard most from brand leaders and marketers is "How do I increase my digital share of voice, without wasting my ad dollars?"
