In my book, 'Non-Food Franchising', I mention the idea of business ownership and its 'trifecta' opportunity... 1) First, you are obviously building cash flow. 2) Second, you receive many tax advantages and other benefits that W2 employees are not entitled to (the government encourages business ownership through the tax code). 3) You are creating an asset that should one day have an exit value. Again, this is not the case for most W2 employees. In a February 2024 survey, aspiring business owners preferred the option to “buy a franchise” over buying an existing business by more than a two-to-one margin. While 65% indicated interest in the franchise purchase option, only 31% indicated an interest in buying an existing business for sale. These results are very consistent with our last review of aspiring business owner preferences. Starting up a non-franchise business was chosen second most often as an option, by 55% of respondents. (The totals add up to more than 100% since survey participants could choose more than one option and are considering more than one). As with the 80-90% of our franchise clients that also invest in real estate, I also invest heavily in both of these 'asset classes'. A common thread I hear daily from clients around the country these days is that there simply aren't many 'good real estate deals' to be had at this time. I credit this as one of the factors driving the unprecedented demand we are seeing for 'non-food' franchises. In many cases, franchising can provide a great alternative asset in an investor's portfolio. Franchising-wise, why do we focus on industries outside of food? Please know that we love the food guys - and we need them as consumers. But my humble belief is that when you put your owner hat on, there are simply easier ways to make money in most cases.
