As with the 80-90% of our franchise clients that also invest in real estate, I also invest heavily in both of these 'asset classes'. A common thread I hear daily from clients around the country these days is that there simply aren't many 'good real estate deals' to be had at this time. I credit this as one of the factors driving the unprecedented demand we are seeing for 'non-food' franchises. Survey data show that between 15-26% of aspiring franchisees already own at least one business, according to Franchise Insights. Their reasons for now exploring a franchise opportunity may be due to several possibilities such as a desire to upgrade or to complement their existing businesses or to better achieve scale. In the franchise industry, the pursuit of scale economies can be seen in the fact that over half of all franchises are owned by multi-unit operators. In my book, 'Non-Food Franchising', I mention the idea of business ownership and its 'trifecta' opportunity... 1) First, you are obviously building cash flow. 2) Second, you receive many tax advantages and other benefits that W2 employees are not entitled to (the government encourages business ownership through the tax code). 3) You are creating an asset that should one day have an exit value.
