I’m attending ASHRAE for the first time. Immersing in the language and engineering-side focus. An architect in a strange land! But not so strange. Great organization, focused on carbon in operations and embedded in materials and processes of building. They have a DEI focus for the association and work, and strong female leadership. Starting to feel like my peeps. Maybe a bit more awareness of behavior change and biophilia, landscape impacts, and community scale synergies and awareness for design and carbon reduction is needed. I know I have a lot to learn about analysis and alignment between standards and codes. I’m in a session now about “Harmony” between all the ASHRAE and other standards for greater impact. A wonderful discussion. AND This is big for @ashraenews @nbi and the building industry! Standard 240P - out on Feb 8 for public comment. Have at it. Inform it, learn about it. This is a standard to unify #BLCA (building life cycle analysis) for #climateimpact through measurement and reduction of #GHG.

Last week, I had the pleasure of facilitating a senior leaders panel as part of the Australian Water Association #QWater23 conference. The topic was "Addressing Critical Safety Risks of Capital Works over the Next Decade". We covered a whole range of issues - #psychosocialsafety, #processsafety, our changing workforce and the #warfortalent, attracting people to the #waterindustry, working in remote locations, the role of #technology and #innovation, and much more. The underlying theme that came through strongly was the importance of #leadership and critically, the #TransformationalLeadership that we need to address the challenges of the next decade. We need to think holistically, we need to work collaboratively and we need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people in what will be a busy decade for our sector. It was a fantastic conversation! How many products in your specification have Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s)? For the past two years, we’ve been investigating embodied carbon through a specification-based approach to better understand the carbon value of our Master Outline Spec. Last year we expanded our research by building a team of consultants (BBS & halfclimatedesign), and through our leadership and collaboration we discovered that 72% of products within specifications do not have EPD’s available at all! Over the coming weeks and months, we will be sharing how we got here through this initiative to build awareness through advocacy and education. The goal: to bring people together through leadership, and to create meaningful change now in our joint efforts towards reducing embodied carbon in buildings. An opportunity to celebrate businesses that balance profit and purpose. 🚨 Leadership Update at SBTi 🚨 Luiz Amaral, CEO of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), has stepped down for personal reasons. Chief Legal Officer Susan Jenny Ehr steps in as interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement. This change comes during a challenging year for SBTi, highlighted by internal controversy over a new policy on "environmental attribute certificates" to abate Scope 3 emissions. Employees were particularly unhappy with this policy, believing it allowed companies to circumvent stricter guidelines. This dissatisfaction led to calls for Amaral's resignation.
