The upcoming general election will see a significant emphasis on the climate emergency, nature, and the transition to net zero. A recent YouGov survey has highlighted that environmental concerns, particularly climate change, are ranked as the fifth most important issue for voters. The ongoing debate surrounding retrofitting versus rebuilding and the prevalence of draughty homes in the UK has been a hot topic in recent years, especially with the rise in energy bills. The English Housing Survey indicates that approximately 60% of homes have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below, falling short of the target of a C rating by 2030. This inefficiency leads to higher heating energy consumption, increased bills, and exacerbates fuel poverty affecting around 13.4% of households in England. As sustainable designers, our primary focus is on addressing these challenges and working towards achieving net zero in how we build, maintain, and operate buildings. Consequently, we have analyzed the positions of the major political parties on these critical issues. Learn more:

The upcoming general election will be heavily influenced by the climate emergency, nature, and the transition to net zero. A recent YouGov poll indicates that environmental concerns, including climate change, are the fifth most important issue for voters. In recent years, the debate between retrofitting and rebuilding, as well as the issue of draughty homes in the UK, have been making headlines due to rising energy bills. The English Housing Survey shows that approximately 60% of homes have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below, falling short of the target of a C rating by 2030. This inefficiency leads to increased heating energy consumption, higher bills, and worsens fuel poverty affecting around 13.4% of households in England. Our focus as sustainable designers is on addressing these challenges and achieving net zero in how we build, maintain, and operate buildings. Therefore, we have assessed the positions of the major parties on these issues. Read more:

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change committee is urging the UK to reinstate incentives for purchasing #EVs to combat slowing sales growth. #Electricvehicles are essential for reaching net-zero carbon emission targets. Addressing affordability and expanding #EVcharging infrastructure are crucial steps. The government's actions in this area will be key for the UK's progress in tackling climate change. https://hubs.ly/Q02lv03Y0

📰 A new poll from the Local Government Association has found that two thirds of councils are not confident in hitting their climate targets. 📊 Our new #ScorecardsSuccesses report demonstrates that good governance and access to funding are the key factors that enable council climate action, but these can only be achieved with additional national guidance and resources. More at: https://lnkd.in/eCG69bV3 🌍 We call on climate action to become a statutory duty, matched with increased funding from the UK government and devolved administrations. https://lnkd.in/eQcvndTc

This initiative is requesting the EU to accelerate building renovation to increase the energy efficiency. This measure would reduce families' electricity bills, reduce dependence on foreign fossil energy sources and, more importantly, reduce emissions and tackle climate change. Let's keep in mind that 40% of emissions come from the built environment. Senator, Parliament of Canada; Past President, Pearson Centre; Former CRTC Commissioner. In search of bold ideas. Artist! / Sénateur, Parlement du Canada; ancien conseiller du CRTC et chroniqueur!
Explaining the basics about climate change! At the Senate Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources committee I asked about the role and need for environmental impact assessments. Some argue that these impact assessments slow down development, infrastructure projects, and economic growth. As the witness, Alexandria Pike, explains there is a balance to be had, and sometimes we do need to act with a sense of urgency. Not doing these assessments can make matters worse over the long-term, but so can acting too slowly. As a society, Canada has the capability to strike that balance.

🍀 🎙 St. Patrick's Day Special Release! 🎙 🍀 "If we tackle buildings, we're well on our way to tackling climate change," said Ciarán Cuffe, Dublin's own Green Party MEP 🌍✨ and get an insider take from the lead negotiator on the EU's new rules on energy efficiency on buildings - source of nearly 40% of EU emissions and more than a third of its energy use. Last week, the 'recast' Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 🏛️🌱decisively passed the EU Parliament and is headed to the Council of the EU for final approval. We talk about what it could mean for #climatetech #innovation. I first met Cuffe when he was a Dublin City Councillor more comfortable with a megaphone than the legislative give-and-take in the complex EU system. We talk a bit about that journey, upcoming European Parliament elections, the results of COP, and whether the elections of 2024 will represent more climate progress or see new policies under threat from #greenlash. Enjoy this for Paddy's Day and try to forgive the Dad jokes. 🌿💚 🎧 Listen now and join the conversation at wickedproblems.earth - also available at links in the comments!. #StPatricksDay #ClimateAction #EuropeanParliament #Sustainability #WickedProblemsPodcast https://lnkd.in/eKunaHhE

Commission calls on Member States to improve their National Energy and Climate Plans to ensure collective achievement of the EU´s 2030 targets: https://lnkd.in/eGPevDtD In terms of multi-level governance in the NECP drafting process, the Commission’s overall assessment is that only a few Member States have managed to involve stakeholders significantly in the process – such as local authorities. The assessment describes more consultations than proper dialogues. “Local and regional authorities are important for the implementation of energy and climate policies. However, very few Member States demonstrate concrete evidence of how they involve them in the process of preparing the draft updated NECP and even fewer are building on an established multilevel dialogue for this process”. #climate #energy #sustainability #governance The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR)
