The upcoming general election will see a significant emphasis on the climate emergency, nature, and the transition to net zero. A recent YouGov survey has highlighted that environmental concerns, particularly climate change, are ranked as the fifth most important issue for voters. The ongoing debate surrounding retrofitting versus rebuilding and the prevalence of draughty homes in the UK has been a hot topic in recent years, especially with the rise in energy bills. The English Housing Survey indicates that approximately 60% of homes have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below, falling short of the target of a C rating by 2030. This inefficiency leads to higher heating energy consumption, increased bills, and exacerbates fuel poverty affecting around 13.4% of households in England. As sustainable designers, our primary focus is on addressing these challenges and working towards achieving net zero in how we build, maintain, and operate buildings.
