Open RAN is coming to Italy for the first time! Vodafone and Nokia today announced a strengthening of their partnership which includes plans to run a commercial 5G Open RAN pilot covering a cluster of sites in northern Italy. And that’s not all. Vodafone and Orange also revealed today that we have jointly conducted a successful pilot based on Open RAN technology with the first real-life experience of 4G calls over a cluster of shared commercial network sites in a rural area near Bucharest, Romania. Today’s announcements reinforce our commitment, and that of our partners, in supporting the EU digital economy with the deployment of customer-focused Open RAN networks. Open RAN builds on our vision to develop a fully automated and programmable network backed by a strong vendor and developer ecosystem. Here's Ericsson on the record saying it will support the O-RAN Cat A interface, but not the unenhanced Cat B for M-MIMO Radio Units. Vodafone says it will take Ericsson's Open RAN commitments at face value, but it will put it to work on proving its credentials. It will use its 170k site tender to provide an incentive (and a warning). One rival Open RAN vendor (OK, it's Mavenir) says that Ericsson's lack of support for the existing M-MIMO category is a tactic to delay things and lock out rivals, although it also says it will adopt the new interface in time. Confused? Hopefully not. In the end, it's going to come down to the desire of operators to truly keep their deployment options open. This is BIG news for #OpenRAN as AT&T partners with Ericsson to make it a reality in one of the largest brownfield mobile network deployments in the world. I was pre-briefed by executives and asked some tough questions. With that said - I believe that the operator is well positioned to execute against some very aggressive plans and timelines given its history with open source and critical involvement in helping to codify the standards necessary to make it an operational reality. AT&T will also embrace a multi-vendor ecosystem approach which I believe is key to the success of disaggregated RAN adoption within #5G, #6G and beyond.
