‘Like most problems, things won’t change without collective action. So, how do we hold both our love for fashion and the need to drive change in the fashion industry?’ Michelle Gabriel A couple of weeks ago I posted about ‘what it means to be a citizen’. In my post, I tagged my friend Michelle Gabriel because she continually advocates for collective action and how our involvement can drive change. In her recent op-ed for Teen Vogue, she shares her ideas on how those attending fashion school can integrate sustainability into their education. From adding sustainability-focused courses to building a coalition of like-minded students, you have the agency to be an active participant in driving 'meaningful change in the fashion industry.' I thought sharing her article would help a couple of early professionals in my community know that 'Your love of fashion is a powerful tool for creating new shared futures, and your voice is crucial to creating a fashion education system that makes sustainable change possible.' I'd love to hear from senior leaders in the fashion industry, please share your thoughts and ideas about how you have integrated sustainability into your current role. Absolutely, sustainability in fashion education is vital. What inspired you most from Michelle Gabriel's ideas on driving change, Amy Rauen?
Amy Rauen your infectious joy, openness to collaboration, and unfailing support is beyond. I am so lucky to call you a friend, peer, and co conspirator!!
I’ve taught sustainability in fashion schools. There are more and more programs emerging. However, sustainable focused design programs need holistic systems approach that aligns with career services, brands, industries for networked support for jobs so the pressure doesn’t fall on the student who needs to work to pay off hefty student debt. I hear this dilemma all the time from students.
Absolutely, sustainable fashion education is essential. This article provides valuable suggestions on bridging the gap between the fashion world and the realities of climate change.
Interesting article - with some very valid suggestions on how to better integrate the reality of climate change with the apparent fantasy of fashion.
a topic of interest for you maybe Boyan Stoev. How do you see this industry becoming more transparent and responsible? Is there any B Corp certified fashion company you can think of, for example?

5moLove this article and yes such a needed focus in fashion school! I stumbled into sustainability after already creating a personal styling company. I would have my clients do ‘no buy’ timeperiod in order to stay focused on defining their personal style by understanding the elements and principles of design. I think experiencing that same ‘redesign mindset’ in school would be great, it’s often when our options are limited that we get most creative!
