Did you know the smallest railroad in Kansas operates in Johnson County? 🚂 It's #RailSafetyWeek and we're honoring the Johnson County Airport Commission for winning the 2023 Jake with Distinction Award! 🎖 #RSW24 Safety is critically important to the short line and regional railroad industry! This distinction is awarded to any member railroad with no Federal Railroad Administration reportable injuries or fatalities for the previous year. "The Jake Awards are named for the late Lowell S. “Jake” Jacobson, the former President and General Manager of the Copper Basin Railway. Jake was passionate about promoting railroad safety and that passion inspired a generation of short line railroaders to work hard at improving workplace safety." ➡ bit.ly/3xztSx5

"The safest way to move goods over land." That is rarely reflected in discussions about our nation's railroads, but facts back up that reality: "Data from the Federal Railroad Administration highlight significant safety improvements across the rail industry. The overall train accident rate in 2023 decreased 27% from 2000; the employee injury rate fell 50%; and grade crossing collision rate dropped 25%. Notably, railroads today boast lower employee injury rates than most over major industries, including trucking, airlines, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and even grocery stores." It's #RailSafetyWeek from September 18 through 24. The NRC urges you to join us to increase awareness so we can #StopTrackTragedies. Rail Safety Week is a collaborative effort among Operation Lifesaver, Inc., state Operation Lifesaver programs, and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Please encourage your friends and family to take the Rail Safety Pledge: 1. I will make safe choices around railroad tracks and trains by obeying warning signs and always expecting a train. 2. I will stay off the tracks including when taking photographs or filming videos and will never walk on or too close to railroad tracks (it’s dangerous and illegal). 3. I will only walk, ride or drive across railroad tracks at designated crossings. 4. I will share the rail safety message with my friends and family.

"Why can't we just fix the (expletive) defects?" Secret recordings obtained by 5 INVESTIGATES raise more questions about the safety culture at Minnesota's largest railroad. Here's our latest report, Off The Rails:
A track inspector claimed he was fired for reporting 'too many defects.' His secret recordings may cost BNSF millions.

Federal inspectors said they found an alarming number of defects in the locomotives and railcars Union Pacific Railroad was using at the world’s largest railyard in western State of Nebraska this summer, and the railroad was reluctant to fix the problems. Federal Railroad Administration Administrator Amit Bose wrote a letter to UP’s top three executives Sept. 8 expressing his concern that the defects represent a “significant risk to rail safety “ on the Union Pacific railroad.
