Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending Athletes Authority’s Starting 5 Symposium 🏀 A cracker of an event, with some of the leading practitioners & researchers in the Basketball performance scene. Some of the notes I picked up throughout the day: - Alex provided some insights into the position specific preparation he programs throughout the year. As someone who is still learning the sport these were some key things I needed to hear before beginning the season with Scot’s. - Toby showed us some great examples where rehab provides the oppurtunity for players to focus on practices outside of basketball, where that is creating better habits around nutrition or mental skills to allowing players to take up other roles within the team (e.g. coaching) - Peak Eccentric Force Velcity is a key variable in a powerful step back, one that separates elite guards like Luca Doncic from the rest. - Load management: training volume isn’t the sole concern, intensity, modality & quality of training are often forgotten. - Blake spoke also on ‘Avoidance Preening’, which is something I was unfamiliar before, as well as the concepts of fast and slow components (negative/no observation isn’t failure) - I was able to relate to Matt the most, hearing stories about the balance between part-time work to sustain an income and gaining essential experience from internships. It was a great way to wrap up the day. As I find myself in Italy, I would like to say that summer is over, but given the 28 degrees of heat, I am basking in the warm autumn sun writing about how summer is over without feeling that it is over; at least according to the atmospheric condition. Nevertheless, I am writing this post as a follow up to the Pulitzer winning piece of text I published at the beginning of the summer, where I had outlined my plans for the Summer. No fancy internships (🙅), just raw and smoked fish, and university. I have now completed that chapter in my life, and would like to sharer a few lessons I learnt during the summer: 1. Screaming ‘they don’t know me son’ at dead fish while trying to filet for an impatient customer will not impress anyone: employee of the month ! 2. In Finland people do eat fish other than salmon (and apparently there is a difference between Finnish salmon and Norwegian salmon). 3. If you have the ‘trainee’ tag on, customers will have mercy for you, even when you haven’t learn to filet or recognise different types of fish in 3 months of work (who’s gonna carry the boats?) 4. The Information Technology Program I (hope) completed this summer has been extremely eye opening: first, I have realised that digital marketing studies are something I like and would like to continue in the future. Shame I didnt know that before completing a degree in international relations, and starting a new one in Economics. MR=MC. I am happy that I have helped people pick the right fish to eat, stacked the shelves of the supermarket in a way that would’ve made anyone want to get lost in the meat and cheese section marvelling and the beautiful ‘facing’ of products provided by yours truly. I am also extremely grateful for the people that I worked with in ITP, for the amazing lecturers that made the 9am’s really worth it, and to my PlayStation, for staying by my side and voluntarily keeping me company at 2am while undecided whether I should play NHL15 or Fifa20. #takemeback As for what happens now, I will start writing a book about the primitive desire to be a part of the masses, and how that instinct has been exploited in social media marketing. By doing an internship with the Snowbasin Race Team, you learn to analyze certain mistakes that the athletes make when racing and one of them is making a turn with your upper body. You want your upper body to remain as stable as possible. If you don't, it forces you to have most of your pressure on your inside ski which can make it difficult to turn and cause you to lose control of your skis. At my internship with Weber State Athletics I worked with people across different departments to set up for game days. Game days require good communication and teamwork. During game day we communicate with coaches to make sure things are set up how they would like them. This experience is teaching me about what goes on behind the scenes of sporting events. Entering a role with little prior experience can be nerve-wracking, but interning is all about being a sponge and absorbing as much knowledge as possible. This lesson resonates beyond sports, proving invaluable in any career situation. 🚀 This internship has pushed Ryan to recognize the immense value of seizing opportunities. As an intern, you have the choice to stay quietly at your desk or step out of your comfort zone. Initially, breaking the ice and meeting new people can be daunting, but the rewards of learning about others' lives and making memorable connections are immeasurable. 💡The best advice Ryan has received revolves around three crucial career buckets: industry, specialty, and location. Identifying the industry, such as sports, is a great starting point, followed by narrowing down your specific niche within it. This focus will pave the way for a fulfilling and rewarding career path. 🎯 With dreams of a career in baseball, Ryan is determined to find his place, whether in partnerships or another division. Learning the intricacies of the industry takes time, but this internship has set him on the right track. This is a project that I have had on my mind for some time, after consulting with many students seeking employment and internship opportunities in the local community and who were not finding all the relevant opportunities and organizations based on a simple Google search. Last weekend, I took my first “intern” job in the USA in an unexpected setting: 2024 Spinnaker Cup. Team Typon, who invited me, had raced this long course several times before, and despite my lack of racing experience, they welcomed me aboard. The journey began in San Francisco, where we battled the Golden Gate Bridge’s strong 3-knot current, determined to keep us in the city. From there, we sailed 84 nautical miles to Monterey, facing 8-foot waves and the powerful winds California's coast is known for. The risks are real: fast tacks, sail swaps, and the constant threat of getting tangled in ropes, thrown overboard, or worse. Thanks to the seasoned team (note: not the intern), we had no accidents… except for the high winds tearing our spinnaker apart two hours before the finish. We finished 5th in 12 hours and 9 minutes, setting a record time for the team. What did I learn as the rookie of the crew? …Ask for clear and specific instructions.  …Remember the mistakes you make and try not to repeat them. …Follow the captain’s commands when fast actions are required. This also made me reflect on how I’ve instructed interns in my companies. Often, much clearer terminology, expectations, and feedback would have helped them along the way. All in all, a great experience and I will definitely do it again - just not as an intern anymore. - PS. In full transparency: many of the captain’s decision were 'discussed' after the race… and, I did repeat a mistake… or two 😎

Summer Placements...Sports Biz Program Olin Business School at Washington University With hopes still of reaching our record mark from Summer 2023 by June 1, happy to share that the Business of Sports program in the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis is now up to 28 students who have found either Summer 2024 internships or entry-level placements in sports and entertainment. As I review how these opportunities were sourced, 8 stemmed from direct emails to me from industry employers seeking talent, 6 were through TeamWork Online, 4 were through family/friends, 2 were through LinkedIn, 2 were through team websites, and the others didn't specify. That we have placed nearly 60 students in the last 2 summers across various sports industry internships and entry-level jobs is truly amazing, and makes me feel very lucky to play a mentorship role with such a talented and dynamic group of young people. 25 different companies...12 properties/teams, 9 agencies, 1 speedway, 1 tech company, and 2 "others". 8 companies we've placed students in the past, so 17 new companies we are engaging with this summer. And we have alumni connections at 8 of the 25 companies listed below. Connections, connections...and then more connections. That's the WashU way. When I was in college I met my wife, whose stepdad worked for the company. At the time I did not have any idea what I wanted my degree to focus on. Her stepdad told me if I got a degree in Engineering or Construction Management, he would let me interview with the team for an internship. I set my degree to construction management, took the internship, and never looked back. 2.) What’s the best thing about your job? I love the diversity of the work and the types of people we do the work with. Each job is a new task and a new team. It keeps me on my toes! 3.) Who or what motivates you? My family. I get a lot of my drive from my late father. He was a very successful manager for years and I strive to be like him each and every day. 4.) What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? That time gives the best advice. 5.) What’s your favorite quote? Life’s not about how hard of a hit you can give, it’s about how many you can take and keep getting back up – Sylvester Stallone 6.) They wrote his last name wrong on the birth certificate. My last name should be Hayes, not Hay.
