Years ago, when I lived in Portland, Oregon, I used to have lunch regularly with a friend of mine who had some very strong management credentials, and did fantastic work with leaders. He introduced me to a critical leadership quality and habit... that actually applies in a lot of situations in tiny businesses, even when you're not really a "leader" in that organizational sense. While at the gym yesterday morning, the word North Star crossed my mind, I got to thinking about it in the context of leadership. Using a “North Star” to guide your leadership means having a clear and unwavering vision or set of values that steer your decisions and actions. When’s the last time you thought about your North Star when it comes to your leadership? I have kept a compass (pictured below) on my desk for quite a few years. It’s a moral compass and is a great guide and reminder of what it means to be a leader - forgiveness, integrity, responsibility, and compassion. I try to exhibit these on a daily basis, not just with leadership but in being a good person. #growthmindset #leadershipmindset

Pulling weeds taught me a valuable leadership lesson. Growing up, one of the chores I hated the most was pulling weeds out of my mother's garden. But it was a task she made me do several times a month. And no matter how many times I pulled them, they always grew back. This taught me a valuable leadership lesson -- if left alone, negativity, decline, and decay will naturally grow on my team. Consequently, I, as the leader, must assume the position of weed-puller. #leadership #teamperformance #keynote
