This week, the U.S. Small Business Administration celebrates Small Business Week—a celebration of building a better America through entrepreneurship.
I grew up in a small family business and worked for local businesses during my high school and college years. I then started my corporate career working hand-in-hand with mom-and-pop franchises at 7-Eleven. Many of my closest and most valued business and personal relationships to this day are people with small-business backgrounds and values.
I have also led many large companies, and I know that entrepreneurs are the backbone of a franchise-based company. Today, I invest in and help guide a new generation of entrepreneurs who have built their businesses while keeping the principles of a small business in mind, principles like 1) Focusing on great products, 2) Hiring and retaining the best people, and 3) Truly listening to your customer!
My portfolio includes iconic brands like Friendly's Restaurants and TGI Fridays and newer brands like Smoothie Factory and Red Mango, Inc. These are franchise businesses with entrepreneurial leaders who are hands-on and know their customers, much like small-business owners do.
I have infinite respect and appreciation for small business owners and the lessons and values learned by and from these entrepreneurs.
