As you may remember, earlier this year US East Coast ports were booming with freight as shippers were attempting to avoid big West Coast ports for a number of reasons. However, what goes up must come down, as we're now seeing a return to west coast dominance. October was a booming month for the ports of LA and Long Beach with a collective 735,755 TEU processes in the month. “And November is also shaping up to be a strong month as we see a final holiday push and warehouse replenishment,” said Port of Los Angeles executive director Gene Seroka. Meanwhile, US East Coast and Gulf Coast ports underperformed relative to the West Coast ports seeing a 5.1% year-over-year decline in imports, while West Coast ports saw a 12.7% increase. The biggest hit was felt by the port of Savannah which lost 16.5% of imports, settling at 220,298 TEU. The trend is likely to continue as a newly signed 6-year labour agreement has dispelled fears of strikes on the west coast, and transiting the Panama Canal has become more difficult and more expensive. On 2, 3 and 7 November 2023 respectively, global shipping frontrunners including AP Moller Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company and Hapag Lloyd announced that they would be imposing hefty surcharges on congested vessels at South African ports. While the decision to impose a surcharge seems reasonable in light of the increasingly complex operational conditions at South African ports, those on the receiving end of the surcharge may argue otherwise, as South African cargo owners are once again expected to cough up substantially more than the global standard surcharge. According to statistics from Mexico’s General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine, during the first four months of the year, seaports across Mexico moved a record 2.95 million 20-foot equivalent units, representing an 18.2% year-over-year increase. Most of this volume was handled on Mexico’s nine Pacific Coast ports, totaling 2.14 million TEUs (19% y/y increase). Gulf Coast Mexican ports reported the movement of over 795 thousand TEUs during this same period (14.3% y/y increase). With spot shipping rates from China soaring high during May and most likely June, it is yet to be seen if this growing trend of cargo handling in Mexican ports will continue. #puertosmexicanos #mexicanports #internationaltrade #seafreight #oceanfreight #freightforwarder #maritimelogistics #freightservices +52 (81) 8174 8000 www.crossdock.mx

Did you know that Mexican ports recorded an 86% increase in TEU throughput between 2011 and 2021? Primely located between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and with direct access to the US and Central American markets, Mexico’s capabilities as a transshipment and connection hub for European, African, North American, South America, and East Asian trade have grown exponentially over the last decade. The country’s premier port, the Port of Manzanillo, handled a record 3.37 million TEUs in 2021 which accounted for 48% of Mexico’s total cargo handling for the year. Century’s Mexico network offers efficient door-to-door LTL shipments from Mexico to both the US and to the Central American markets and provides smooth customs clearance for improved intermodal shipping. Mexico’s intermodal shipping capabilities are being constantly enhanced by new cross-border rail and truck services which are being implemented every year. These services have particularly grown in attractiveness as shippers look for alternatives to transiting the Panama Canal amidst its ongoing water conservation challenges. ♦ West Coast Ports Brace for New Surge in Imports - But They’ll Cope This Time! In a recent insightful article by The Loadstar, it was reported that US west coast ports are bracing for a surge in imports, driven by the convergence of supply chain and geopolitical chaos. Factors include the resumption of inventory build-up, returning flows that had been diverted to other US gateways during last year’s labour contract negotiations, a knock-on effect from problems affecting transits through the Panama and Suez canals and concerns about potential disruption at east coast ports as port labour contract negotiations get under way. Weston LaBar, SVP industry relations at Cargomatic, predicted that “there’s a perfect storm coming for the west coast.” The west coast ports have clocked up strong increases in throughput in recent months, reversing the loss of momentum to rivals on the US east and Gulf coasts, and this trend is expected to continue. John S. James Co., U.S. Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders, understand the importance of staying ahead of the curve in the shipping industry.
