Educational institutions in the United States are becoming cyber attackers’ top targets. Red Hat's #ChiefArchitect for Education shares 5 cost-effective–and just plain effective–steps schools can take to protect themselves. 1. Adopt Cybersecurity Pest Practices. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)'s Cybersecurity Framework includes standards, guidelines, and best practices to manage cybersecurity risk. Although created by a government agency, it’s free and available for any organization to use. Its many success stories show that the tool is proven and effective in a variety of situations. 2. Embrace Incremental, Continuous Modernization. Adopting elements of the Cybersecurity Framework is an example of incremental digital transformation. This approach is more effective from a cost, resource, and risk mitigation perspective than the traditional method of undertaking a major change initiative once every few years. 3. Minimize Supply Chain Risk. HECVAT is a questionnaire framework schools can use to evaluate vendor risk profiles. 4. Automate Cybersecurity Practices. Most respondents to The Consortium for School Networking’s 2023 State of EdTech Leadership survey said their organizations do not have full-time employees (FTEs) dedicated to cybersecurity. Schools seeking cybersecurity skill sets must compete with the private sector and its higher pay scales, making filling open positions challenging. 5. Bring IT and Research Together. Colleges and universities are epicenters of research and innovation, constantly churning out new ideas and technologies. Normally, businesses and government agencies are the first to benefit from these efforts. But what if those new ideas and technologies were used internally, too? In closing, the Chief Architect for Education at Red Hat says --> Cybersecurity attacks against the educational system will continue to happen, but there is no reason that schools cannot successfully mitigate them before they do damage. Adopting these five methodologies will put school IT professionals in a good position to get ahead of the risk. What say you? Think about the educational institutions that have played a significant role in your life. Your alma mater. What are other practices that you would advocate? #Cybersecurity #Security #Hack #Education #Schools #Universities #Colleges Lea Fenske :: Jeff Dubé :: Dallas Snider :: Karl Schubert :: Karen Nunn :: Chris Bonhorst :: John M.
