Managing or leading a team full-time means any success you enjoy must come through others. It took me far too many years to come to terms with that concept, but when the lightbulb finally blipped on, it was nothing short of a revelation. In my 3 years at Cardinal, I was fortunate to lead and build a team of talented product managers, designers, and engineers who all happen to be fantastic human beings. Sadly, many of these individuals were recently laid off. If you need to lose a job unexpectedly, I highly recommend doing it with others. Not that you want anybody losing their jobs, but misery does love company and if team bonds are strong enough, maybe they can't be severed so easily. Within a few hours of the news, we had a Slack workspace in place to share our gripes and supportive insights. After a few days, the gripes gave way to resume tips, job search resources, and self-care advice. We even carved out a space for #dadjokes because, well, IYKYK. The available talent in our little corner of Slack is no joke, however, and as much as I enjoy goofing off with these folks, I'd much rather celebrate new jobs and bright opportunities. Once you are hired, you are a Person-as-a-Service. Make sure you don’t get churned. Thinking about your job this way clarifies a lot of things. Here’s what smart product managers do to prevent being churned out: - Add more value than you cost (a LOT more). - Make your buyer (boss and company) look good for hiring you. - Compile lots of social proof and testimonials about the value you are creating so your buyer knows they’re getting what they paid for. I often recommend product managers create a "What have I done for you lately?" report for their products. It helps the customer know the value they are getting from your product. You need a “what have I done for you lately?” report for yourself as well. (H/t to Dunte H. for this idea.)

Life after the layoff, part II: Day 52. An ideal job description? I've seen quite a few job descriptions now, ranging from I-want-that-job to nope-no-thanks-move-along. What if it looked like this... COMPANY: [insert desirable company name here] ROLE: Title that maintains career momentum, but with a sparkle of aspiration LOCATION: Unambiguously Remote PAY: compensation ranges from $respectable - $desirable EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your years of doing the thing ABOUT THE ROLE: This position reports to the head of the discipline at the organization, who has established and integrated the practice seamlessly into the larger business unit. You’ll be doing the thing that comes naturally to you, but with enough complexity that you will grow as a person and as a practitioner in your field. Your experience in our field will allow you to pick up the computer and start contributing after you complete our thoughtful onboarding process in a pleasant amount of time. We pride ourselves in clear communication, so your initial 1:1s with your fellow practitioners and project teammates will feel more like hanging out and discussing cool stuff. RESPONSIBILITIES:  You will practice your craft at an appropriate level in your career, and you’ll be supported in growing both professionally and personally. Mentorship is a key part of the role; you’ll mentor junior staff, your peers, and leadership, showing them The Way. You’ll learn from them too, as true mentorship is always a two-way street. Over the last 3 years, I've interviewed 168 candidates for 11 Product Management roles, from early career PM (2-3 years experience) to Lead/Principal (7-10 years experience). With an average of 461 resumes received per role (which includes 2 roles that garnered over 1500 applicants!), that means there is a ~2% hiring probability per applicant. In November 2023, Snap announced it laid off twenty employees, all holding product management titles. These two well-publicized events indicate nothing substantive, but the reaction on social media exposed many product managers' job insecurities.
