No video or photo will do justice to the experience of a total solar eclipse. Photos and videos are two-dimensional representations of multi-dimensional phenomena. It is something to be experienced.
Cruise downriver with this Virtual Jungle River project from Leo Torres 🚣
It was rendered in UE 5.3 and uses hardware Lumen for reflections and GI, Nanite for all meshes and landscape. Most of the foliage is comprised of Quixel Megascans trees, too!
This is incredible work.
But here's a hot take for you: I don't necessarily think it's a problem for us to reach a point where an AI system like Sora can generate something like this.
That's obviously something of a controversial statement given the idea that such advancements threaten the involvement jobs for actual humans. But where I land in this whole debate is that no matter how advanced AI video generation becomes a computer will never be able to fully replace humans as storytellers. There's a reason people will criticize a badly written movie by saying "it's like AI wrote it" because AI is actually a bad writer.
If you're a creative, you're response to AI shouldn't be to feel threatened. It should be to get BETTER. I can completely see a future where true human talent carries much higher value because people will start to grow weary of the soullessness of AI. AI might be able to match the visual detail of Leo's work, but it will never be able to replace Leo's sense of story and beauty. That's something computers will never be able to do.
As these systems advance, they will be a great addition to the storyteller's tool belt. And the storyteller who keeps perfecting his craft will be able to harness the power of these systems in new and creative ways.
How do you feel about AI video?

Here's a teaser time-lapse of eight of the over 350 still photographs I took of the eclipse on Monday. Unlike the 2017 eclipse, where I dedicated one camera for the partial phase and one for totality and took pictures every 5 minutes, I took pictures with every minute with both cameras this year (one with the orange mylar filter and one with a neutral density filter). These are just a selection of stills from one camera with the mylar filter: near 12:45 PM (First Contact), 1:15 PM, 1:45 PM, 2 PM (Second Contact, no filter), 2:04 PM (Third Contact, exit diamond ring, no filter), 2:15 PM, 2:45 PM, and 3:15 PM (Fourth Contact). Will share the longer minute-by-minute time-lapse video in a week or so. https://lnkd.in/gvy8tfht

https://lnkd.in/eb34ak_9 "The INTERNET is rife with images of airships moored to the Empire State Building. The only problem is, it never happened! The pinnacle of the Empire State Building was built as an airship mooring, but no great airship ever moored there and no crew or passengers ever diembarked an airship to enter the Empire State Building. The narrow, precarious pathway, the 103rd floor, still exists though is off-limits to the public; see this 2016 article by the Daily Mail, UK. Even though the desire to moor airships on buildings existed in the early 1900's, the idea suffered from a major problem: It was a very bad idea!"?!.

What could be more trivial than a geospatial scientist utilising Bonne projection on a St Valentine's Day? Well, there are not so many options.
Anyway.
Enjoy my animation showcasing how the Bonne pseudoconical equal-area projection changes depending on the standard parallel. The two special (limit) cases are:
❤️ - Werner projection, for φ = 90
💔 - Sinusoidal projection, for φ = 0
Such projections, since they look like hearts🫀🫀🫀, are sometimes categorised as Cordiform. By the way, the animation looks like the planet is trying to do some cardio exercise.
As a base map, I used TerraColor® data by Earthstar Geographics LLC.
