This is an advanced degree demanding the highest level of dedication to solving a single, complex problem, but its rewards extend far beyond academic achievement. 🎉 But what does a PhD teach us? 1. Commitment 👩💼 : A PhD instills the perseverance needed to tackle a problem thoroughly, ensuring you see it through to completion despite the challenges. 2. Teamwork 🤝 : It emphasizes the importance of collaboration. Working in a research group means leveraging diverse expertise to find solutions collectively. 3. Management 👨💼 : PhD students and graduates excel in managing time, resources, and team dynamics, skills that are crucial both in academia and beyond. Earning a PhD, not only deepens your understanding of your specific field but also develops personal growth. Graduating with this prestigious degree from Charles University, Prague has filled me with immense gratitude for everyone who supported me. 🙏 It has also instilled a profound confidence to tackle any future challenges. 😊 While the commitment required for a PhD can be daunting, the personal and professional rewards it offers are beyond imagination. So, to all the PhDs out there trying to troubleshoot an experiment, if it is very demanding, just remember that with every single pipetting 😀 , you are closer to success. 🎊 Everyone has a story in their PhDs and it is always better to talk about any challenge that you may face. 📄 Reflecting on my Master's Thesis Journey 🔍 As I conclude my Master's Thesis journey, I wanted to take a moment to come back on the reasons that led to my analysis and on the enablers of my research. 🌍In a world where social media play a central role in shaping public opinion, understanding how Governments utilize platforms to reinforce their power is crucial. This study aimed at shedding light on this evolving landscape, where technology, algorithms, and human behavior intersect, as well as to debunk an important question "is there a difference of use and of perception when comparing official communications from liberal or illiberal regimes?" 🙏 This research was only possible thanks to the curiosity I developed being a literature cram school student at Lycée La Bruyère and then an MSc ISI student at SKEMA Business School. Thanks to the direction of Christophe Bisson, Ph.D. , I was provided with the necessary tools to perform this research. I also benefited a lot from the contribution of Antoine BONDAZ, Ph.D. whom I thank for his time answering my questions in the field of strategic research. At last, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Axelle DEGANS, Ph.D. whom helped me all along as Master's Thesis Supervisor. Congratulations to current Ph.D. student Melanie Buchleiter, MBA for being awarded the Institute for Social Innovation scholarship! Her dissertation focuses on "Utilizing Indigenous Worldviews to Re-define, Measure, and Carryout Business Success." Melanie's study aims to establish theory on how to utilize Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and organizing in alignment with strengths-based leadership to create a broader, more complex definition of business success. It seeks to answer questions such as: How do Indigenous people experience working in non-Indigenous-owned American businesses? This research places Indigenous people at the center and periphery of managing and organizing the ongoing life and function of organizations, considering what workplaces and communities might look like when their organizing principles are based on Indigenous knowledge and practices. "As I am completing my last semesters here at Fielding, I am finding more and more struggles in obtaining financial assistance, which is my single largest barrier to completing my studies," she said. "This scholarship helps me get closer to seeing a way to complete my Ph.D. within the next two semesters (Spring and Summer 2024). Your help is allowing me to spend less time identifying ways to cover the expense so that I have more time (and mental resources) to focus on the research study and the long-term impact that it can have on Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals, businesses, and communities. Good morning my LinkedIn Community, Happy New Month! This morning as I reflect on the intense, enlightening journey that was the National University Dissertation Boot Camp, I'm filled with a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Over the past two and a half days, I, alongside my fellow doctoral candidates, have been immersed in a rigorous program designed to propel us toward the completion of our dissertations with precision and scholarly rigor. The boot camp was no ordinary academic endeavor. It was a comprehensive dive into critical thinking, doctoral acumen, research study alignment, and the mastery of research methods to name a few. The dedicated NU faculty, with their wealth of knowledge and expertise, provided individualized support and insights that were nothing short of transformative. Their guidance was instrumental in demystifying the dissertation process and setting us on a path to success. What made this experience uniquely valuable was the emphasis on cohort relationships. Collaborating and engaging in both formal and informal discussions with peers and faculty not only enriched our learning but also created a support network that I am confident will extend beyond the confines of this boot camp. Completing a dissertation is a monumental task. It requires dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to scholarly excellence. This boot camp has equipped us with the tools and confidence needed to undertake this challenge head-on. It's a reminder that while the journey to completing a dissertation is arduous, it is immensely rewarding and a testament to our dedication to our fields of study. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the faculty members and my fellow scholars who made this experience so invaluable. Your support, insight, and camaraderie have left an indelible mark on my doctoral journey. To my fellow scholars, as we move forward, let's carry with us the lessons learned and the relationships forged during this boot camp. This month marked the end of my sixth semester of classes in my PhD program. If I told you this semester was not tough, that would be dishonest. However, I'm happy to tell you that for all of its challenges, it was equally productive and fulfilling. Among other key moments, I had an opportunity to virtually present at the Academy of Management with a wonderful group of scholars. I am very grateful for Theresa M. Welbourne, PhD, who graciously welcomed me to contribute to the research around Employee Resource Groups. I'm also excited to be down to my final non-research course in the program, assuming my summer grades are good enough. Like always, here's a few new lessons: 1) Challenge your process: While writing for this semester, I discovered more about my energy levels, which forced me to challenge how I normally did my work. That was a good decision and led to some of my most productive work since joining the program. 2) Facing the challenge is sometimes the hardest part: For the past two years I put off setting up a citation management system for myself because I was scared I wouldn't understand it. I eventually gave in and it was the best decision I made in the semester. 3) You aren't alone: During this semester I had a number of moments where there was exceptional pressure. I found my community - of family, fellow students, and professors - helped a lot in reminding me to persist and of my why. Don't be afraid to reach into your community, and don't be unwilling to help others who may need a boost. Sometimes it makes all the difference. With one comprehensive exam, one class, and one dissertation to go (more on that soon, I promise), I feel humbled and excited to enter my final year of this journey. Six down, three to go...

A story every PhD student relate 👨🏼🎓 An amazing journey began when you, fueled by a passion for unraveling the mysteries of the brain, joined your dream lab as a wide-eyed graduate student. From the outset, your PI recognized your raw potential and took you under his/her wing, nurturing your curiosity and guiding you through the intricate world of academic research. Together, you and your PI embarked on ambitious experiments, facing challenges head-on and celebrating victories as a team. Through late nights in the lab and countless brainstorming sessions, collaboration flourished, fueled by mutual respect and a shared commitment to scientific discovery. However, the journey was not without its trials. As deadlines loomed and experiments failed, tensions occasionally arose, testing the strength of the mentorship bond. Yet, it was during these moments of adversity that your partnership truly shone. PIs' unwavering support and encouragement bolstered your's confidence, while your resilience and determination inspired PI to push the boundaries of scientific inquiry. As the years passed, your relationship evolved beyond that of a professor and student; you and your PI became colleagues, collaborators, and friends. Together, navigated the highs and lows of academia, celebrating breakthroughs and persevering through setbacks with unwavering determination. Ultimately, the partnership yielded not only groundbreaking research but also personal growth and mutual respect. Finished my final presentation for the semester. Time flies as I have completed the third semester into my (don’t ask me how many years it is) part time PhD program. A lot of my conversations with others usually start with ‘How do you find the time to do it?”. I am still working out the answer to that question. The question I ask myself is ‘was it worthit for all the pain and sacrifice (less time with my family, two burn outs to near exhaustion, more burden to my team mates, self doubt, the list goes on). Sharing across why I think it’s been worth it so far, for those considering going back to school and especially into research (which is different from a taught masters). 1) I am growing my intelligence and my resilience - I am surrounded by very smart and driven people who have so much passion about the problem they are solving. I have mentors like Ahmad Alhilal who doesn’t give up on me and keeps pushing me to be a better self. 2) I get to see a glimpse of the future and the possibilities - before I started my PhD I thought ‘academics are not commercial, they don’t solve the problem at hand’. Now I realize, it’s not that academics are not commercial, but the commercial problems of today have been solved by academics years ago and research of ‘current topic’ is not worth a researcher’s time. Quite the opposite is that corporates are not thinking hard about building out for the future. 3) it’s a workout for my brain - I think my brain cells can probably bench 200 pounds now. 4) I learn that success is not necessary measured by outcome (accept or reject), but to be able to get past my own ego, to learn from the feedback from those who has climbed every mountain, and tell myself i will eventually get there.

Having recently presented my internal thesis seminar, I could now see the stark contrast between the public perception of "becoming a PhD" and its actual experience. This revelation made me eager to share my take on the PhD journey about it being so much more in depth and nuances than usually recognized. What the World Thinks We Learn in a PhD... The usual story would be that a PhD adventure is an immersion into one dimension of specialization. It’s usually represented as one big bubble of highly-specialized knowledge that we should be filling with our research and stuff. What We Actually Learn... In reality, however, PhD candidates learn a vivid pie of diverse skills and competencies. We of course broaden our specialist horizons, but that is merely a fragment of the whole process. As we pursue our PhD, we refine our capacity to present sophisticated arguments in a way that is easy and persuasive, adjusting the language we use naturally between highbrow and non-highbrow company. It is further powered by an insatiable curiosity that demands us to challenge the status quo, interrogate our respective fields of expertise and courageously venture into uncharted territories. On this tough path, we develop a kind of resilience that is essential to problem-solving; We are always finding creative answers to complicated problems. As we juggle many responsibilities, we learn to be able to quickly adapt ourselves to new roles and learn the skill of managing our time effectively. Collaborative team efforts are a crucial part of our research and help us to develop our project management skills with the support of others. We are not just meant to gather raw data, but rather pinch out meaningful insights from it, heightening our knowledge further. And unlike amassing a wealth of expert knowledge, it is our relentless pursuit of lifelong learning that really defines what makes us the type of experts we are. Thus, PhD students and graduates, let us take a moment to appreciate the full spectrum of skills that we have gained. To the world, let’s begin uncovering what PhD knowledge is truly all about. It’s not just depth in one area but breadth and depth across many!
