Good news, bad news—we all have our fair share as leaders. The trick lies in delivering them strategically. A recent newsletter brought an insightful point – quickly get the bad news out, like when your profits shrink or work reshuffles are impending. But, when it comes to the good news, take your time. This pattern is evident daily in the PR world and in the way influencers tease their followers with exciting news to come. Kind of like a thrilling suspense novel, right? This suspense isn’t limited to PR; I see it with recruiting too at KIP Search. Be it a hopeful job applicant or a manager poised to make that perfect hire, they're all waiting for that positive update. And while no news doesn’t always translate to good news in the hiring industry, I strive to ensure each party is kept in the loop. In this dance of recruitment, just like back home in Minnesota, authenticity is key. No sugarcoating, leading folks on or false hopes. The Midwest values I grew up with guide this approach. Here's a bit of advice for aspiring PR pros: Never take a job that's not aligned with your values. In 2021, Gallup research revealed that ethical leadership was the single most important factor in workplace satisfaction for Millennials and Gen Z. Additionally, salary matters less to Gen Z than any previous generation (Source: Deloitte). The values economy is outpacing traditional benefits when it comes to earning loyalty from the younger workforce. The PR industry should be no different. Disney is a great example. The company continues to hire for PR roles at astronomical salaries despite ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Think about it. Doing PR at Disney! It's a dream job (with a very nice paycheck) under any other circumstances. But, do you want to be the person rehabbing the reputation of executives who are actively unethical? Think about the real human beings and hard-working people who are affected. When I started my career back in 2013, I would've thought it was crazy to say you shouldn't take a job with one of the biggest companies in the world. What changed? I grew up... as a person and as a PR professional.
