Today's oral arguments in the Supreme Court are an affirming and historic event. The country needed this -- to hear how the court works, and the impartiality and integrity ultimately at work in this branch of our government. Whatever your politics, perhaps we can agree. Our people sorely needed to hear and see the fascinating and plain-spoken conduct of this court. Riveting to listen to it. #justicesystem #presidentialelection https://lnkd.in/erzMKYi7

During my externship at the State of Georgia Office of the Attorney General last spring, I got into the habit of reviewing the Supreme Court of Georgia opinions as they were released. A small thing, but it helps me to stay on top of some of the developing law in the state, especially as it relates to whatever issue I may be working on at the time (I'm still in law school, so it changes frequently). While I don't usually read too deep into the disciplinary opinions, that there was a rare dissenting opinion for one of the matters caught my eye. And while I'm not one who often speaks to mental health struggles, Justice Shawn Ellen LaGrua's words resonated with me so deeply: "[I]t is often difficult to recognize that you are in the fog until it has lifted." On the next page, she provides the following information: "I remind lawyers of the resources available from the State Bar of Georgia and Attorney Wellness Task Force, including: -- The Lawyers Assistance Program is a confidential service outsourced to CorpCare Associates, Inc., to help State Bar members with life’s difficulties. Members are entitled to six prepaid clinical sessions per calendar year. -- The SOLACE program is designed to assist any member of the legal community (lawyers, judges, law office and court staff, law students and their families) in Georgia who suffer serious loss to a sudden catastrophic event, injury or illness. -- Georgia Lawyers Helping Lawyers is a confidential volunteer peer support program created by the Lawyer Assistance Committee of the State Bar of Georgia to give additional tools to members who might benefit from a peer to talk to about the difficulties in their lives. Peer support generally involves people sharing similar experiences with an illness, struggle, professional issue, or life circumstance." Creating awareness of the mental health struggles faced by lawyers has been part of the career-readiness mission at Georgia State University College of Law, and they've done an excellent job in preparing us not only for those challenges, but also equipping us with tools to navigate them. What a wonderful thing to see a Justice of the high court of the state operating in the same manner. I hope those who need to see the Justice's words are reached by them.
