As the company hit record profits, it fired and underpaid employees who sought leaves for illness, new parenthood and life crises. We knew something wasn’t working with how Amazon managed employees trying to go out on leave, but internal documents and interviews showed the flaws were graver than we ever imagined. This touches corporate as well as hourly employees, often at times when they are particularly vulnerable.
