We live in a world of the ‘extrovert ideal: the omnipresent belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight’. This is reflected in the schooling system and how businesses operate. It turns out though that at least 33% of the population is introverted, and that is NOT a bad thing or a limitation - it is an opportunity. If Introversion is 'a preference for environments that are not over stimulating', this and other insights in this book create the following questions for me: ·       Have we over committed to open plan offices. ·       Are we forcing a work style that only benefits a proportion of our employees. ·       How can we embrace mindfulness to increase our complex problem \ solving skills. ·       How as parents can we support introverted children (deep thinkers) who live in an education system increasing designed for extroversion (ironically, perhaps to suit work requirements). Great leaders get the best out of their team by embracing the diversity in their team and creating conditions for ALL of their team to excel and add the most value. Herzberg Two factor theory on Motivation and Hygiene - Is it still the gold standard that organizations are following or should we move beyond them and look at other factors when it comes to organizational pyschology? My belief is that organisations should look beyond the two factor theory and include expectancy theory which takes into account employees intrumentality and valence + equity theory which factors the fact that individuals wish to maintain equity in their work relationship. JUST PUBLISHED! In this article within the Journal of Organizational Effectiveness: People and Performance, I with my coauthor Mandy Kasprzyk integrate multiple streams in research on workplace social courage. Specifically, we (1) apply a novel framework, psychological contract theory, to identify (2) work engagement and moral disengagement as potential antecedents of social courage, (3) unethical pro-organizational behaviors as a possible duplicitous outcome of these antecedents and (4) moderating effects of moral disengagement on the relations of work engagement with these outcomes. We find that work engagement and moral disengagement significantly relate to both workplace social courage and unethical pro-organizational behaviors, and we also support that moral disengagement moderates the relation of work engagement with unethical pro-organizational behaviors but not workplace social courage. Thus, work engagement can promote both workplace social courage and unethical pro-organizational behaviors, and the non-significant moderating effect on the relations of courage provides further support for the "resiliency of courage." I’ve heard so many times the more hours you put in the more you get out…. ‘Interestingly enough, one study from Stanford University, however, debunks that belief. In his research, economics professor John Pencavel found that productivity per hour declined sharply when a person works more than 50 hours a week.
