If you work with young job-seekers in Scotland do you know about the Job Start Payment? It's a one-off payment to help young people and care leavers with the costs of starting a new job if they’ve been out of work and are claiming means-tested benefits. In a recent meeting with The Scottish Government we learnt that estimated take-up for the Job Start Payment is a shockingly low 15% (down from 30% a few years ago), so we’re giving it a 📣📣📣. There are several resources (including factsheets, posters and social media text) as well as guidance notes on the Social Security Scotland website (see the link below) that you may find useful to help spread the word. And, of course, it’s included in our benefits calculator as one of the many ‘Other Entitlements’ we signpost to people when relevant to their circumstances. New updates on important documents for California employers are here! The State of California has recently updated two employment pamphlets - "Time of Hire" and "For Your Benefit". The "Time of Hire" pamphlet, updated by the Department of Industrial Relations Division of Workers Compensation, is designed to provide new employees with everything they need to know about workers’ compensation - from filing a claim to navigating medical care. The other important document, "For Your Benefit" pamphlet, done by the Employment Development Department (EDD), covers all you need to know about state-provided benefits for employees during their termination, or when they take certain leaves. This also serves as a comprehensive guide to obtaining unemployment benefits, including eligibility criteria and tax requirements. Both documents are available in English and Spanish. Remember to provide these essential pamphlets at the time of hiring and discharging employees to keep them well informed.

Centrelink- "Our purpose is to support Australians by efficiently delivering high-quality, accessible services and payments on behalf of the government." Ironically, the support offered is often counterproductive and I will explain why. I worked at Centrelink and I am therefore well aware that most of its employees are caring skillful individuals who do their best but there is a culture of mistrust of welfare recipients. Sue Vardon, a competent leader who was well aware of effective communication and achievement recognition, was the first CE of Centrelink. In 2002, she developed a program that included 800 uni degree graduates, Personal Advisers as we were called, who were spread across Australia to assist in changing the culture of Centrelink employees and develop individual plans for high-risk recipients. For 2 years we worked side-by-side with Centrelink personnel and began to earn their trust and train them in depth with people skills, conflict resolution, and other interpersonal skills while running seminars and developing plans for our assigned clients. In 2004 the government canned the program (because reportedly, changes were needed), Sue resigned and we were out of a job. Can you see the irony when a program works yet are stopped and another like Robodebt is killing people and nothing is done? My argument since my tenure with them is that it represents too many people. The structure is too big and needs to be broken up so there are more lines to phone with trained and knowledgable staff answering. No one person can have the information required (forget techno access as they have to read it anyway before they can answer your question) on all aspects of Centrelink. #centrelink #communityissues #family #agedcareaustralia #disablity #unemployment #change #servicenow https://lnkd.in/guGq_djU

National Minimum Wage expert with unique insights & knowledge who passionately supports businesses to mitigate the financial and reputational impact of ongoing or pending HMRC NMW investigations.
I’ve seen many situations where individuals are expected to undertake an unpaid trial as part of the recruitment process. David Linden Shadow SNP Spokesperson recently raised a question in parliament around the statistics of the number of people working unpaid trials. During a #nationalminimumwage (NMW) investigation HMRC will always explore any practices which involve any unpaid trials or shifts- these can easily become a risk area for possible #nmw breaches. A couple of hours shadowing a colleague is acceptable, however, there are many other practices which maybe viewed as working time. #recruitment #fairpay #workingtime #minimumwage

RBE Partner Donald S. Smith provides some timely updates on #EmploymentLaw, specifically #NoncompeteAgreements. Noncompete agreements have been used for years by employers to protect themselves from employees who might otherwise hurt their business by working for competing businesses, using trade secrets or confidential information, stealing customers, and taking groups of employees (such as “corporate raiding”). The agreements have been governed by state law, and Indiana employers have been successful in seeking enforcement of such agreements as long as they can demonstrate a “legitimate business interest” in keeping a former employee from competing. #HumanResources What do all of these changes mean for employment noncompete agreements in Indiana? About 1 in 5 US workers are bound by a workplace noncompete clause that restricts their #employment options, according to estimates by the Federal Trade Commission. Are you among this group? If so, change may be on the horizon. President Joe Biden issued an executive order in 2021 calling on the FTC to ban or limit noncompete agreements, and this January, the commission proposed a new rule to prevent employers from entering into new #noncompete clauses and to rescind existing ones. Meanwhile, other government agencies have also been tackling the thorny issue of noncompete clauses. For my latest in SUCCESS Magazine, I caught up on the latest in the debate, thanks to the insight of Wendy LaManque. And Sara Davenport recounted her experiences with these restrictive clauses during her former life as a TV anchor—and how she ultimately changed careers, as a result. Whether you're an employer or an employee, read more about how you can navigate these agreements during a time of flux: https://lnkd.in/e_RD4-6U
