Giving birth to a baby should have been a joyful event, an event of celebration but this is not the case always. The day a baby is born is the most dangerous day of a child’s life in all countries, rich and poor. About 1 million children die each year on the day they are born, representing 15 percent of all deaths among under-5 children each year. In 2021, nearly half of all deaths before age 5 occurred in the first 28 days of life (the neonatal period). Worldwide, 1 in 10 babies is born preterm (<37 weeks’ gestation) – that means one baby is born premature every two seconds. Rates of preterm birth have barely changed during the past decade, and in some places rates are rising. In 2020 it was estimated that nearly 1 million newborns died due to complications of preterm birth (one baby every 40 seconds) and millions more survived with disabilities that follow them and their families throughout their lives. Preterm birth is the single largest killer of children under 5 years of age, accounting for more than one in three of all neonatal (first month of life) deaths. Today is 17 November -the World Prematurity Day. Since 2011, this day has been celebrated to talk about prematurity, discuss the concerns of preterm birth, heighten the awareness about prematurity and above all, renewing the commitment to prevent preterm births by preventive and curative measures. The global theme of this year’s WPD is Small Actions, BIG IMPACT: Immediate Skin-to-Skin Care for Every Baby, Everywhere. Noora Health’s Care Companion Program which is a health education program delivered at the hospitals to educate the family caregivers and to help build healthy behaviours has been proved to be an essential measure to promote skin-to-skin care. A study conducted in India found 78% increment in skin-to-skin care among new parents who were trained through the care companion program technically supported by Noora Health. This is obvious that skin-to-skin care not only has been shown to increase breastfeeding and promote exclusive breastfeeding but also it can regulate the stress, anxiety, and psychological distress of both mother and the baby. Information source: Born too soon Decade of action on preterm births
"Small actions, big impact: Immediate skin-to-skin care for every baby, everywhere." We could not agree more with this year’s theme for World Prematurity Day. The Care Companion Program will continue to advocate for Kangaroo Mother Care for all infants, especially preterm babies. #WorldPrematurityDay #KangarooCare #SkinToSkin #NewbornCare #CareCompanionProgram
