"Does it matter that consumers don't understand the term 'Ultra-processed'?" 🤔 (from my point of view) YES, it does! ✅ Consumers do prefer 'clean label' foods, and if possible avoid UPFs. But do they really know what it means? The food industry have found fancy ways to communicate with consumers that might misslead their choices and perceptions on the foods. What I believe in?...that the near future will bring changes on this topic, and it will become a big TREND (restrain of UPFs) prompted by consumers 🕵♀️, and the keen players of the food industry will face ecxiting challenges and opprotunities to do more and do different. #foodinnovation #healthyfood #healthychoices #lessprocessedfoods #healthierindustry #fooddevelopment #foodproductdevelopment

Clean Label : The new trend that is here to stay Of late, there has been a significant shift in consumer preferences towards more transparent and wholesome food options. This trend has given rise to the clean label movement, which emphasizes simplicity, transparency, and natural ingredients in food products. But what exactly are clean label food products? At its core, the concept of clean label revolves around the idea of transparency in food production and labeling. Conventional processed food products contain a long list of artificial additives, preservatives, and unfamiliar ingredients. While clean label products are characterized by their simplicity and purity. These typically contain fewer, minimally processed ingredients, making it easier for consumers to understand what they're eating and make informed choices about their diet. One of the key principles of the clean label movement is the use of natural ingredients. This includes ingredients that are free from synthetic additives, artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. Clean label brands prioritize sourcing high-quality, wholesome ingredients that are recognizable and familiar to consumers. Transparency is another cornerstone of the clean label movement. Clean label brands are committed to providing consumers with transparency about their products, including where ingredients come from and how they're produced. It is this transparency that fosters trust and credibility between brands and consumers, helping to build strong and loyal customer relationships over time. The rise of social media and digital communication channels has played a significant role in driving awareness and demand for clean label food products. Consumers today are increasingly seeking out brands that share their values and beliefs. Despite the growing popularity of clean label food products, it is not without its challenges. Sourcing high-quality natural ingredients can be more expensive and logistically challenging for manufacturers, leading to higher production costs. Additionally, maintaining product consistency and shelf life without the use of artificial additives can pose technical challenges for food producers. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and differentiation within the clean label space. The clean label movement represents a fundamental shift in consumer attitudes towards food. By prioritizing simplicity, transparency, and natural ingredients, clean label brands are reshaping the food industry and empowering consumers to make healthier and more informed choices about what they eat. As the demand for clean label products continues to grow, so too will the opportunity for brands to innovate, differentiate, and thrive in this evolving market landscape. 🌈 Diving Deeper into Food Processing: A Nuanced Look at Health Impact! 🌱🍏 Recent research challenges the one-size-fits-all narrative on ultra-processed foods, emphasizing the importance of considering nutritional nuances. As a food additive supplier committed to transparency, we believe it's essential to shed light on these findings. 🤔 **Beyond the Broad Brushstroke:** Criticism of ultra-processed foods often overlooks the diversity within this category. Notably, some plant-based meats and milks, designed to replicate animal protein, fare well nutritionally compared to their counterparts. The NOVA classification system, while helpful, can sometimes overshadow the beneficial nutritional aspects of certain processed foods. 🌾 **Plant-Based Wonders:** Take, for example, soy-based burgers and milks, often labeled as ultra-processed. Contrary to assumptions, a study comparing soy burgers to lean beef revealed similar or lower energy density, higher protein content, and lower fat levels in the plant-based alternative. Similarly, soymilk showcased lower energy density, equivalent protein levels, and added fiber compared to cow milk. 🔍 **Unpacking the Research:** The inconceivability that all ultra-processed foods impact health similarly is evident in studies spanning 24 to 40 years. Some ultra-processed foods showed a higher risk of type-two diabetes, while others demonstrated a lower risk. Our commitment to transparency encourages further research into how processed foods affect eating patterns and health. 📚 **Urgent Need for Nuanced Discussions:** As the industry evolves, a nuanced approach to understanding the mechanics of processed food impact is crucial. Let's engage in conversations that go beyond broad categorizations, exploring individual products' nutritional profiles and potential health impacts. Together, we can foster a more informed and health-conscious community! 🌍🍽️ #FoodInnovation #NutritionalNuances #HealthierChoices #TransparencyMatters #supplier #foodadditives #food #foodandbeverage #foodandbeverageindustry

We posted previously on the misconception that processed food is inherently bad for us. Virtually all foods available for purchase are processed to some degree, even fresh produce. Terms surrounding processed foods are not consistently defined and have different meanings to different people. A study published in Trends in Food Science and Technology reviewed over 100 scientific papers to discover if different criteria exist in classification systems for processed foods and, if so, what distinguishes them. They found that most criteria are not aligned with existing scientific evidence on nutrition and food processing. Christina Sadler, PhD Candidate at the University of Surrey and a Senior Manager at EUFIC who led the research said: “Processing has a complex influence on nutritional content, it can result in both positive or negative consequences, depending on the technical process applied and the food… Processing and nutritional value do not have a linear relationship and these concepts need to be dissociated.” Other key takeaways: -There is no consensus on what determines the level of food processing; -Classification includes the extent, nature of change, place, and purpose of processing; -Processed food concepts relate to naturalness, additives, convenience, home cooking; -Food classifications embody social and cultural elements and subjective terms. “’Processing’ is a chaotic conception, not only concerned with technical processes. Most classification systems do not include quantitative measures but, instead, imply a correlation between ‘processing’ and nutrition.” This is further complicated by ongoing discussions about the concept of “whole food” in relation to “healthy diets” and the risk assessment of food additives which is quite nuanced. While processed foods should not make up the majority of our diet, they are not inherently dangerous and can safely be consumed in moderation. It’s also important to consider the accessibility of these foods which are often more affordable and have a longer shelf-life. Many processed foods are nutritious (e.g. frozen fruits) and often are more accessible options for people who lack access to fresh foods. #unbiasedscipod #WomenInSTEM #publichealth #sciencepodcast #scienceiscool #scienceliteracy #scicomm #ScienceCommunication #microlearning #scienceiscool #evidencebased #nutrition #greenwashing #nutritionscience
