To mark World Earth Day today, colleagues in our sustainability team are taking over our internal comms to share tips on how to be more sustainable. We’re also taking a moment to look back at the past 12 months and some of the ways in which we’re helping to safeguard the environment through our SUSTAIN strategy. 🌳 We're proud to have been partnered with Canopy for one year. This partnership cements our commitment to keep vital forests out of our viscose fabrics and paper packaging. 🌍 Science-based targets approval. Our near-term science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). By 2030, we’re committed to reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions from our operations by 46%. These commitments are part of our wider target to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 through the British Retail Consortium’s Climate Action Roadmap. 👚 Textiles 2030. As part of our goal to make all our own brand products sustainable by 2030, BCI cotton now accounts for 70% of cotton in our own brand products. ♻ Sample Sales. Our in-house sample sales mean that none of our samples go to waste and help us to raise money for our charity partners FareShare Greater Manchester and the Retail Trust, with almost £10,000 raised since last summer. #ProudToBeNBrown #EarthDay #ESG

This week, we launched our on-site Greener Choice initiative. - From a simple surfboard fin to a hyper-technical sailing jacket - every product has an environmental impact. The top watersports brands are working to minimise this footprint and produce products with less impact on our planet. We can all make more informed choices when we invest in our gear. But this isn’t always easy, with a mix of technical eco jargon and blanket sustainability claims creating some tricky waters to navigate. To help light the way, we’ve developed WSO Greener Choice; selected products that have a lessened environmental impact - broken down into four primary sustain categories. For us, it’s about getting our community out there, in the best gear possible, for as long as possible. Before repairing, re-selling, donating, or recycling. Hey foodies! We want to take a moment to address an important topic that often comes up in conversations about sustainability: the idea of perfection.       Many of us are passionate about making a positive impact on the environment, and that's fantastic! But sometimes, we find ourselves confused about how much we need to do to be truly sustainable. We wonder if our efforts are "good enough" or if we might unknowingly fall into the trap of greenwashing. How much does one have to do before one can be considered sustainable? This can make trying to become sustainable on your own challenging, as you can never be sure what is good enough and trying to do everything at once is overwhelming.      Here's the thing: this idea of perfection is impossible. But that doesn't mean your efforts don't matter! 🤔 HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU ARE MAKING AN IMPACT A lot of the sustainability-related actions I take don’t have a tangible/immediate impact. Like: - Using ethical banks - Raising awareness about the challenges and opportunities humanity faces - Supporting campaigning organisations, including sending emails to my MP about environmental and social issues - Being a green shareholder in Big Oil through Follow This | Shareholders change the world, who put pressure on these companies to change their ways - Only working with purpose-driven organisations (focusing on changemakers in the sustainability space) - Limited consumption of everything - Travelling mostly by bike So I try to also take actions that: 👀 Give me a sense of (tangible) efficacy 🔀 Have co-benefits. E.g. give away items via Olio • Share More, Waste Less. This helps me clear out space at home, feel part of a community, and have greater confidence that my items will be reused. A highlight from the past week was a few collections of items I’d first listed on Olio a few months ago. But it was only in the past week that they were requested. I gave away about 80 jars and an iron water filler jug. The jars will be used by: - A charity called The Real Junk Food Project Doncaster. They rescue edible surplus food from supermarkets, restaurants and shops – e.g. by making jams and chutneys and selling them on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis through their network of local, community-focused cafes, food boutiques or event catering. - Storage of personal items by someone who’s just moved houses.
