If you have a sales process that’s working, you should be hiring. But sometimes founders get scared because “what if things stop working?” If that happens, you’ll work to fix what’s broken. Worst case, you’ll have to fire the new rep.

Why are some sales teams more successful than others? Having been in the recruiting industry for 19 years, I've noticed that excellence goes far beyond the skills listed on a resume. When you have a senior position to fill, do you hire someone with the right experience or promote a proven performer? This is an area I made several mistakes when building the sales team at Zipwhip. Early on, we filled almost all our sales manager positions with internal promotions. Later, we realized we had become too insular and started hiring all our managers from the outside. This led to some of our best employees feeling like there was no room for promotion because we always looked outside the company. Don’t swing from one extreme to the other like I did. Keep a good mix of internal promotions and external hires so that your team sees they have an opportunity for promotion and you get a steady flow of ideas and best practices from outside your organization. 

Here are the answers to the test... pipeline, revenue, and retention solve all problems. Who can argue with this... anyone? We all know this is exactly what is needed. Instead of solving THESE... most are "too busy" trying doing everything but. OR they waste time and money going with those who have never done it before. This is inspired by Amy Volas post the other day... about not hiring sales leadership to get it done right. Amy has seen it all when it comes to hiring the first VP of Sales and all the things companies will do to postpone their success by cutting corners or going with a friend. So again... if you have problems, PIPELINE, REVENUE and RETENTION are the answers. All the other stuff doesn't matter if you can't get these 3 things done right.

Starting a career in sales can be exciting and rewarding, but for new sales reps, it's important to have realistic expectations. Misconceptions about the role can lead to disappointment and high turnover rates. As a Team Lead on Brainshark's Account Development team, I understand what it's like to be in their shoes. Two years ago, I had my own ideas about what sales would be like, but I've since learned about the highs and lows of the job.
