Marc Daubert Mid Co-Op Blog When I first saw Jitsik on the Drexel University portal when applying for my first co-op, I was not sure what to expect. All I knew was that I had an interest in game design and cars and figured that this would be a way to explore both interests at the same time. What I didn't know was how much I would learn in regards to business and entrepreneurship that I would normally never see working for a larger company. Jitsik is an early stage startup that gave me plenty of opportunities to develop many skills while working there. From developing the website, conducting Human Subject studies to writing code, I was able to learn a vast amount of knowledge that I am sure will help me as I progress in my professional life. My favorite aspects from working at the Jitsik startup have definitely been to see other people interact with the Virtual Reality driving scenarios I developed. It is inspiring to hear people compliment and generally have a fun time when driving around in the virtual worlds that I helped build. It was also a blast to see people having their first VR experience with us, especially when they floor the pedal in our parking lot scenario. Working here has also given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people, from brilliant professors to seasoned game designers. It's not just the people I met outside the company that are brilliant, but also the team within. Everyone has been extremely helpful and eager to co-operate projects. I enjoyed helping my fellow Drexel students Jonathan develop the Jitsik website or Emara create new models for our new scenarios. Our lead developer Jaime, a seasoned VR developer, has made working here at Jitsik a fun experience. He is always willing to extend a hand and help co-op students with whatever they are struggling with. Jitsik has been extremely helpful with figuring out what kind of career I want to pursue when I leave college, and I want to thank my mentors Dr. Helen Loeb and Jaime Hernandez for this co-op opportunity. I can only hope my future co-op experiences match up to this one.

Growth in gaming isn't just about better graphics or more immersive experiences. It's about the people behind the pixels. The gaming industry is booming. But as it evolves, so does the need for a diverse, skilled workforce. Education is the key. The article "Leveling Up: How Education Fuels Growth In The Gaming Industry" dives deep into this. It argues for pathways that cater to a wide range of skills and backgrounds. And I couldn't agree more. Why? Because innovation thrives on diversity. Different perspectives bring fresh ideas. And this isn't nice to have in a field as dynamic as gaming. It's a must. But here's the kicker: Creating these pathways isn't just about filling positions. It's about shaping the future of the industry. It's about making sure we're not just playing games. We're changing the game. And that starts with education. Let's advocate for more inclusive, comprehensive educational programs and build a talent pipeline as diverse as the worlds we create in these games. Because when we do, we all level up. ⚠My last post on Mentorship stats got some surprising traction so - My registration page has a questionnaire where students can tell me their history in their own words. Not hard data, per se, but-- -- ⭕ Other Institutions Students go to before they find me Coursera, Interaction Design Foundations Master Classes, Springboard, DesignLab, Elevtr, Avocademy, Game Jams, Youtube ⭕ Weird Clicking Noises Nearly 40% of Registrants felt aimless in their lives until they thought of Design and then it all “clicked” for them. The majority of people experience this revelation as a slow burn; often the result of remaining stagnant in an unfulfilling job - sometimes for decades. But this insight can also come or after a major life change - often layoffs (5) but sometimes loss (1). ⭕ Here there be Portfolios There is a universal sense of confusion and frustration when making a Game UI Portfolio. As mentioned in an earlier post, only 36%(!) of Registrants even have a Portfolio of any kind, let alone game related. Building a competitive Portfolio is hard enough, but it sounds like, from the Student's perspective: you’re sailing on the open ocean on a starless night… you wouldn’t know where to go even if you could get there 😔 . ⭕ Solar Eclipse levels of Shade And a chief reason I won’t directly quote from the questionnaire is because some of y’all are *very* angry and resentful of the previous Bootcamps and Cohorts you have taken. ~25% of Registrants write they felt they weren’t prepared for the day-to-day practicalities of a real Game UI job, or that they felt lost in a crowd without feeling present and seen. I’ve even seen some prospective students take to LinkedIn to call out previous institutions by name(!) with dozens of responses in the thread citing similar experiences(!!) ⭕ Stranger in a Strange Land Of the people who live outside of America, Canada, and the UK - aboutish 30% of Registrants feel a huge gulf in their opportunities to learn and enter the Western-centric game Industry. This Game Design Iron Curtain that surrounds the West is largely invisible to those living inside of it, and unnervingly tall when viewed from the outside. ⭕ Love Language The word Love was used by 14 separate people. Passion by 8. Dream by 4.
