I still remember the night 6 years ago when I received an oral offer from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) partner during my final interview. Stepping out of the BCG Tokyo office in Kioicho, a fancy area in Tokyo, I stood under a tree adorned with illumination lights and called my mom in China to share the news, even though she had no idea what BCG is. Today, I received a welcome gift from the BCG Alumni team, marking my official departure from the firm. I worked at BCG for 3.5 years, and after a 2-year LOA as an MBA student, I decided not to return but to embark on a new journey as a venture capitalist at TGVP. When I joined BCG, I had zero business acumen. My background was in steel manufacturing; I only knew how to make and deliver a steel coil overseas. I often wondered if the partner had made a mistake that night, so I felt I had to prove him right before he regretted his decision. During my time at BCG, I participated in 10+ projects, including venture investing, GTM, EV charging business development, PMI for aircraft makers' M&A, and organizational restructuring. These experiences taught me critical thinking, challenged my intellect, shaped my growth mindset, and cultivated storytelling skills. Looking back, I realize that BCG fundamentally shaped the way I work and think, and create slides (of course!) today. Now, as a new BCG alum and an incoming investor at TGVP, I am excited to apply what I’ve learned to make a positive impact on society. When my portfolio achieves a successful exit in the future, I look forward to calling my mom again—hopefully, she won't have to wait too long.
