As someone who has been #WFH for several years, I'll never understand the following arguments: - work never gets done - we can't collaborate as a team I've never experienced these issue in a good team setting, so I question managements ability to manage and build a team remotely if these are issues. In my short period of time having to commute in a hybrid setting to support a cyber role, I've quickly learned that: - I lose so much time due to traffic(3hrs a day) that could be used for relaxing and personal health, along with learning and development. - less work gets done from all the talking with so many people in a small area. - I miss getting mini breaks in my little environment with my cat. Not too mention: - you miss out on a bigger talent pool. - we save the environment by driving less and less road rage. The main take away is, every department and environment is different, but in many cases, roles can and should be fully remote, if possible and if said employee works better and prefers that. While I know these are my views, I would happily enjoy hearing other opinions on the subject as I know everyone is different, especially those who love being onsite and love to chat and talk in person, and how they feel about remote workers. Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend time with Avani D. CEO of Schellman & here is what you can learn from her success.............. 🌐 #HR #Cyber #BurnOut #MentalHealth Cybersecurity teams are undoubtedly under pressure: experiencing sick leave, insomnia, and more. Of course, threats are intensifying, and #CISOs/security managers are overloaded 🔥, but these reasons alone don't fully explain the phenomenon. Client verbatims include: "What I'm doing feels pointless", "My objectives are constantly changing", "I don't understand what's expected of me"... It's clear that the level of stress is not solely related to the nature of the tasks performed ! 📉 1️⃣ Several organizations have recently taken an interesting approach: they are integrating #HR topics directly into their maturity frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO) and associated processes (assurance, cyber programs, etc.) 📚. This is excellent as it leads to the definition of concrete and measurable objectives for staff turnover, employee motivation, and work-life balance... and facilitates regular discussions with top management 👥, alongside the convergence towards zero-trust and resilience! 2️⃣ Security teams consist of a wide range of experts (pentesters, CERT analysts, etc.). Unfortunately, too many companies still tend to overvalue management at the expense of #expertise. It's crucial in cyber teams to foster an ecosystem that supports experts 👍! There's a plethora of options to explore: expertise career paths, certifications, communities, conferences, media... Let's not wait for the experts to leave before recognizing their value! 3️⃣ #Mobility is also crucial. Many employees feel trapped in their positions, with no possibility for advancement in the next decade 📈. The solution is quite straightforward: promote mobility! For example, spending 3 years as a project manager, 2 years as a SOC analyst, 3 years in cyberculture... #Cybersecurity is vast enough to offer rich and exciting careers 🎯! From experience, a cyber team thrives with a mobility rate of at least 10%. 4️⃣ And, of course, #salaries need to be discussed. Ask two CISOs/security experts from the same large organization about their pay. I recently met two CISOs with similar profiles in the same company: one was paid a fixed salary 💵, while the other received a 50% bonus based on personal objectives. It's impossible to foster any team spirit and solidarity under such conditions! Addressing salary alignment, up-skilling, training, certification, and mobility are crucial to enhancing well-being in cyber 📢. Clearly, this cannot be achieved by HR alone; CISOs/managers must also be involved. This is especially true since some of the above advice applies to them as well... considering many CISOs have been in their current role for more than a decade 😉

We had a really sh*t day yesterday at Profectus Cyber At times I love my job as a cyber security recruiter & at times it's challenging. No let me rephrase that, at times it's flipping cr*p! As many within the security community with wise heads on their shoulders will know this is the case with pretty much any rewarding career. However yesterday was particularly tough for me & the team...... One of our clients who we've made 42 successful hires with rejected 4 of the candidates that we put forward as an agency. The standards within this particular client organization are exceptionally high (for all the right reasons, & the process is long again for all the right reasons). This makes things emotionally pretty challenging for me personally. Why? I'm a ridiculously obsessive cyber security recruiter meaning in any long application process I get incredibly close to many of the cyber security professionals I'm recruiting. They literally become friends of mine during the process. So, seeing them disappointed is naturally upsetting. Delivering feedback yesterday was not easy....... If you're having a challenging week I hope this post helps you and makes you realise you're really not alone. Anything that's worth having is worth fighting for and success in any career is not linear.
