24 years ago, this well crafted newspaper ad threw me headfirst into the game!
I didn't have all the skills they wanted, but what I did have was that hustle and grind mentality. Go figure? Hustle pays off, every single time.
Fast forward, we've built something different at PHANTOM BILLSTICKERS. We're all about empowering creative voices, taking care of our peeps, the planet, and embracing diversity in everything we do.
Phantom's vision? Metamorphose Aotearoa's cityscapes into creative wonder.
Our secret weapons? A passionate team who knows how to hustle, shit hot sites and pure, unadulterated creativity – it's how we amplify your message and take it to the streets in style.
In our offices, you'll find the following principles plastered on the walls, on posters, of course. This is our vibe, just like the newspaper ad:
1. Stick up for people.
2. Keep it real.
3. Think outside the frame.
4. Act with passion.
5. Challenge the world.
We're here to help you own the streets. Connect with us and make some real creative magic happen!

Those guys over at Nike were on to something when they coined "Just Do It." I've taken that directive to heart.
It has always been a goal of mine to work with artists and creators, specifically comedians. In the last few years, I've attended way more shows than a person should. While laughing, I'd always dreamt of producing a show - thinking critically about the perfect lineup flow, ways of engaging the crowd, and venue options. One day, someone reached out saying they heard I produce comedy shows and needed one for a company christmas party. I hadn't ever booked a venue. I hadn't ever booked comics. I didn't own a microphone. But....Sure! I said.
That week, I spent time thinking about how I was going to do it - nothing was clicking. I figured, let's just start calling places. Slowly and surely, I started to figure out the right questions to ask, the necessary information to have, and how to negotiate appropriately. 2 weeks later, a place was booked, comics were signed on, and all within budget. I kinda...Just Do'd (did) It. The show went great! Ok, it went fine (the people had an awesome time, I'm just hyper critical of myself and execution - ex-soccer player habits). Lots of learnings from that first one. Now, a few years later with way more experience, a new opportunity presented itself.
One quick coffee catch up with Nicole Harvey and next thing you know, we're producing a comedy show for the e-commerce community with some of the best up and coming comics in the country.

H/t to Eleanor Hawkins for highlighting the rise of "challenger firms."
Tired of big agency bureaucracy? Feel like your in-house team is stretched thin? I get it. As a communications consultant, I'm here to offer a third option: hiring a boutique agency, aka, a challenger firm.
Challenger firms like my own, Mission & Purpose Communications, bring personal attention, agility, innovation, and passion to the table -- all at a fraction of the cost of working with a larger firm.
I specialize in translating complex ideas into compelling stories that drive growth for my clients. No junior staffers or layers of approval - just a dedicated partnership with me.
My approach works because I take the time to understand your business inside and out. From there, I deliver creative comms strategies tailored to reach your goals.
There's room for all kinds of communication support, whether it's from a large agency or boutique firm.
If you're looking for help with a small or mid-sized project or an ongoing role, let's talk. DM me for a free 30-minute consultation to see if we're a fit. I can't wait to learn more about your story.

FROM $47B TO ZERO IN LESS THAN 5 YEARS 🙄
With rumors of WeWork filing for bankruptcy, I remember their pre-IPO days when their S1 Filing was made public and their romantic mission to investors revealed: "Our mission is to elevate the world's consciousness".
.................
From a recent conversation I had with my friend Manfredi Paci, who at Shopify is helping emerging brands scale up their sales, it seems like, when evaluating companies, VC funds are now more focused on profitability metrics over number of users, revenue growth or visions of abstract prosperity.
Today's higher cost of debt definitely cooled off even the more visionary investors out there. Hopefully this will be a lesson to learn from, even in more dovish times.
"I'm saving the best for last."
"The big reveal will be at the end."
Please don't.
Too many founders wait too long to share a figurative "punch-in-the-mouth".
Something to make investors say, "WOW".
But your audience loses interest by the time you get to it.
You have a limited amount of time.
You have to GET and MAINTAIN interest.
A magician has a big trick at the end but keeps you engaged throughout the performance.
Leave some of your "wow" moments for Q&A. They will seem more organic.
Focus on interest throughout the pitch. Not just in pockets after a build up.

I started my communications career working at the big agencies, right out of college. I consider my time at Edelman, Outcast and smaller boutique agencies my PR bootcamp, which was critical to my next steps leading comms in-house. I encourage anyone pursuing a career in communications to first start at a large agency, where you'll learn right away if you're cut out for this career in the long-term. Pay your dues early and get those brand name logos on your resume.
Now that I've started my own consultancy at Cast Influence Marketing and PR, my clients expect big agency counsel and battle-tested expertise but 1:1 attention where I'm fully embedded in the marketing team. This produces the best results, where I'm seen as a strategic member of the team and not an external consultant with limited visibility into the day-to-day. This does limit my ability to take on every project that comes my way but I'm okay with that. Burn out is real in this profession and you need to set boundaries with your time.
Had I know "Fractional CCO" would become as attractive as it is today, I would have branded my role in this way a lot sooner. That said, big agencies have their place in this world, which is why global account teams like Microsoft, Samsung, and Salesforce rely on them. It takes an army to run those accounts!
