This article: We Need to Talk about How Health Care Is “Broken” from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, provides a quick overview of the issues facing healthcare today. No matter what demographic you are in - access to affordable, competent, caring health care is something everyone can get behind. https://lnkd.in/gJZPNA98
In my entire 44 years in nursing, I never thought I would support nurses striking. It is so contrary to the commitment to care that nurses ascribe to. But in looking at what is happening within the health care industry, it seems that it is exactly that commitment that makes striking necessary to fix a broken system. Thank you Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL and Jaime Weiland for sharing this perspective. #Nurses #NursesonLinkedIn #brokenhealthcare

Virtual Nursing Offers a New Career for Burned-Out Nurses More than a year into the pandemic, as new COVID variants surged in the United States, Nicole McQueen sought a change from her high-stress career in the operating room. After 14 years as a registered nurse in the OR, she switched to virtual nursing. Three years later, she has no regrets. "I wanted to reinvigorate my skills. It piqued my curiosity, and it was something new," she said. "It was also physically less demanding." Check out this recent study published in the Journal of Nursing Administration. It sheds light on the effectiveness of the Best Fit program for supporting newly licensed nurses (NLNs) during their transition to practice. The program matches NLNs with units where they are likely to thrive based on their personality traits and unit characteristics. The study found that NLNs who participated in the program reported higher levels of job satisfaction, confidence, and intention to remain in their current positions than those who did not participate. These findings underscore the importance of considering individual and unit characteristics when assigning NLNs to practice settings to ensure they feel supported by their managers and colleagues. Read the complete study here and learn how nursing education programs and healthcare organizations can better support the transition of newly licensed nurses into the workforce. 💥 Nurses! Let's celebrate diversity & ditch unconscious bias this April #CelebrateDiversityMonth🤝 We ALL have biases, but they shouldn't affect how we care for patients! ✨ This week's Periop Life blog sheds light on the critical role nurses play in fostering equitable healthcare environments and gives tips to help you navigate bias. 1️⃣ Complete a Self-Assessment: Continuous self-monitoring of actions and perspectives is key to evaluating potential biases. Utilizing tools like the DEI Self-Assessment (follow the blog link below) helps enhance awareness and sensitivity to biases that may inadvertently affect patient care. 2️⃣ Put Your Patient’s Needs in Perspective: Viewing each patient as a unique individual, deserving of respect and optimal care, is paramount. Nurses are encouraged to adopt a patient-centered approach, reflecting on whether the care they provide aligns with what they would desire for themselves or their loved ones. 3️⃣ Keep Learning: “Diversity speaks many languages and has many faces,” says Debra Callender, DNP, RN, CNOR, CSSM, in the blog. “As we all learn more about what it means to live in a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture, we can continue to think differently about ways to curb our bias and fuel healthy patient-to-nurse relationships.” She encourages perioperative nurses to learn about implicit bias as part of DEI education in healthcare. When have you had to check your unconscious bias? Tell us in the comments. Head to the blog to learn more and share with your nurse fam! https://bit.ly/4cA5wD7 #PeriopLife #HealthcareEquity #Inclusion #ornurse #nurslife #nursing #nurses #nurse
