Jill Edmondson’s Post

I gotta say something about this… My previous company that laid me off last year also laid off 2000 others today. They did this by sending 2000 emails and cutting their access off immediately. Oh, and some people were sent FedEx shipping labels before they received the email. W T F. I don’t care if you’re laying off 2 people or 2000, you give a person the respect they deserve and have some sort of live conversation. No closure. No empathy. No care to be had. If you’re not ashamed of yourselves, you should be. I’m embarrassed for you. People are not a ledger entry. You have saved yourself money now-that’s neat. What’s the return you will receive on this divestment of people, other than saving money? Your customers will no longer have the efficient service they should be receiving. You have burned bridges with 2K+ people who have thoughts and opinions on how they just got fired-they WILL share this with others. Layoffs suck and it’s always happening in business-that’s the reality, BUT maybe think next time about how you do it. Think about the person who may be the sole provider in the home. Think about the person who gave you 20+ years of their life to work at YOUR company. Think about the person who feels like their dignity has just been stripped from such a callous action. I’m sure y’all who made the decisions on who goes will enjoy your 4th of July weekend, but maybe think about the 2000 people whose lives have just been dramatically changed and all the emotions they’re experiencing right now. Hope that makes your hot dog taste better. Do better! Treat people like people. Have the balls to give these folks some respect. Show how your purpose is people.

I hear you, but there is no way to have a call with 2000 people at the same time.

I have been in your shoes with a different company and although I am not in your shoes now, thankfully, I was let go in the same manner at a different company several year ago. Is there a good way to lay people off? When it happened to me, I could not think of way it could have been done different. It is unfortunate, it is life changing, but once you get past the shock, there are new doors and new opportunities. I don’t think UKG is proud about how things played out, but overall they are good to employees and hopefully they are taking care of our friends and coworkers who have left us. I am sorry this happened to you and everyone else impacted. It is a rough thing to go through.

Jill, sorry to hear. What do you think they should have done? What's the right way to let 2000 people go at the same time. Seems like a nightmare but there must be a better way.

The WARN Act requires 60 days advance notice of a mass layoff.

Some of us have shipping label notifications and still no indication of job status...😬

There is no easy way to communicate this individually and it's always going to be a sour conversation. Unfortunately this happens in the job market all the time, it's happened to me also. The only advice is to suck it up, take it on the chin, prove them wrong with a better job and don't look back! It's business, not personal.

I love how you stand up and speak for others who are afraid to do it, Jill!

You do realize that in a company that size… people are literally a “ledger entry”. Just a number with dollar signs. And yes, not doubt some of those folks got crushed getting cut. Just remember, people voted to destroy the economy… just own it and move on.

Sorry to hear Jill about your job, I 200% agree with you companies should show empathy and respect to the folks who have done so much of the company. GOOD LUCK
