Good luck to local authority colleagues in the run up to the #GeneralElection. A plea from the Adult Support Sector: please promote inclusive elections. #Disabled people have the same right to vote as people without a disability, and Government decisions affect them - the attack on PIP just one example, and of course funding! #MyVoteMyVoice campaign provides accessible information and resources for people with learning disabilities, #Autistic people and other support needs, including a very handy voting passport that can make the actual process easier for both polling station staff and the person with LD. My area of interest is LD, but obviously the same applies for other disabilities. https://lnkd.in/eVDFCtqV #AccessibleElections #Accessibility #Inclusion #InclusiveElections

Fortunately, we have EU Elections to shine a spotlight on that important subject of underrepresentation of persons with disability: And with up to 5 candidates with a disability (me for the greens, #Monica Semedo (Fokus), #Claude Keup (CSV), #Raymond Remakel (Pirates)… we don‘t seem to position so badly in Luxembourg. On a national level however, none of the 60 MPs has a disability and even the High Disability Board (CSPH) rarely gets decisive concideration on matters concerning people with special needs / older people: Last example to date: Parliamentary doc. 7524 on Care quality in residential facilities!

Our research in 2021 showed that 40% of the general public were unaware that autistic people and people with learning disabilities had equal rights to vote. That's why we started #MyVoteMyVoice - a joint campaign between us, Dimensions UK, Mencap and Ambitious about Autism that seeks to make voting and elections more accessible. We want politicians and political parties to commit to a more inclusive system so everyone can use their right to vote - without barriers. Join us, The Democracy Network, and two of our campaign spokespeople Hannah Molloy and Dr Mark Brookes MBE at this online event next week to find out more: https://lnkd.in/ejc3d2gm #Voting #Voter #VoterRights #Elections #UKElections #Disability #Autism #LearningDisabilities #MyVoteMatters #AccessibleVoting #AccessibilityMatters #DisabilityRights #DisabilityInclusion #AutismInclusion #UKPolitics #SupportWorkers

🔓 What is the EU doing to make sure voting is accessible for everyone? 🔓 VISIT OUR WEBSITE TO FIND OUT MORE ➡ https://lnkd.in/gvgRXTAy As we approach the EU elections in 2024, it's crucial to address the accessibility of voting for people with disabilities. The EU is taking steps to make voting more accessible, including the development of materials that are easy to understand and efforts to make voting stations more accessible. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that everyone can vote independently and privately. Accessible voting means that all polling places need to be easy to access, that information about the election is clear and understandable for everyone (meaning it is accessible in easy language), and that all voters can use the voting machines or computers without difficulty. Everyone's vote is important, so it's essential to create an inclusive voting environment where people with Down Syndrome and other disabilities can participate fully and without barriers.
